The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking to hire seven (7) student assistants, in a learning capacity, under the close supervision of Senior Transportation Engineers, the student assistants will assist professional engineering staff with duties relating to the development of project plans, estimates, and specifications for projects.
In a learning capacity, the student assistants will also assist with the administration of construction contracts, receiving guidance from engineers, resident engineers, and engineering technicians.
Assignments will include both office and field work to help broaden their understanding of engineering practices and procedures. Through these experiences, Student Assistants will strengthen their analytical and technical skills in project design and construction, while gaining practical, hands-on experience in the role of an engineer within Caltrans.
Conditions of Employment

Prerequisites
Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (fall, spring, and winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list.

Students must be enrolled in at least six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.

Work Schedule
F lexible workdays and work hours, Monday – Friday, between 8 AM – 5 PM. Final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.
Additional Work Schedule
Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday – Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).
Compensation
$18.28 – $28.16 per hour.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.
- Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term.
- Must possess basic mathematical, analytical, and computer skills (including Microsoft Excel and Word). Must be able to work in both office and field settings and follow directions under close supervision.

Duties and Responsibilities
- In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will apply mathematical and computer skills to engineering tasks in the design, surveying, and construction of projects.
- In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will assist engineers and engineering technicians in performing site reviews and verifying field information for design and construction.
- In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will produce and review engineering reports, plans, document reviews and conducting testing of materials.
- In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will assist design and field engineers in determining earthwork, paving, excavation, drainage, and other project needs.
- In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will complete calculations, project schedules, and other documents using Microsoft Excel, Word, computer scheduling software, and other computer applications.
- In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will file, copy work, complete data entry, archive, and prepare and compile various reports, graphs, charts, and letters.
- In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will complete quantity calculations, designing features for roadways (including drainage structures), processing of documents, preparing estimates, and updating existing databases, and/or spreadsheets. In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will initiate inspections of finished products, calculation of units completed for payment, monitoring of contractor operations to ensure compliance with safety orders, and sampling materials.
