University of Wisconsin–Madison students can take their knowledge of sustainability and local governments to the next level with UniverCity Alliance’s new digital badge.
Digital badges provide non-credit, professional development opportunities and highlight specific skills, achievements, and interests. UniverCity’s Sustainable Development for Local Government badge course provides knowledge about Wisconsin local governments, a framework on how to actualize sustainable development used by countries around the world, and sustainable development for the municipal scale.

Digital badges are verifiable, portable credentials that represent a learner’s skills, achievements, and knowledge (Division of Continuing Studies Digital Badging).
Digital badges help job seekers stand out in a competitive job market by providing evidence of their abilities and specialized skills. They are shareable across various platforms, including LinkedIn, personal websites, and digital resumes, and provide opportunities for professional sharing, personal branding, and networking on professional social networking sites (Division of Continuing Studies Digital Badging)
The badge will first be offered to UW–Madison students. UniverCity Alliance aims to open the opportunity to local government partners and community members who are interested in building on their knowledge.
Through this course, students will learn about a framework on how to actualize sustainable development used by countries around the world, sustainable development for the municipal scale, and tools and skills for aligning sustainable development goals with local government planning efforts. Individual learners will explore, reflect on, and participate in local government sustainability efforts.
This course includes eight modules addressing local government structure and functions, sustainable development goals, and the intersection of sustainable development and local government. The course is asynchronous, fully virtual, and hosted in Canvas.
The course includes five hours of pre-recorded videos and approximately five hours of assignments for assessment.
Learners who have demonstrated achievement of all learning outcomes by completing the assessment assignments earn the Sustainable Development for Local Government badge.
This badge is free for UW–Madison students.
