What are the responsibilities and job description for the Volunteer Programs Manager position at United Way Pioneer Valley?
Full-time · Springfield, MA · $50,000–$65,000 benefits · Open until filled
United Way of Pioneer Valley brings people together to meet real needs across our region — food, essentials, and the connections that hold a community together. We’re hiring a Volunteer Programs Manager to lead the people side of that work: recruiting and supporting volunteers, running corporate and group volunteer events, and building the employer and agency partnerships that make those events matter.
This is a role for someone who’s part organizer, part relationship-builder, and part data steward — comfortable planning an event, running it on the day, and then looking at what the numbers say about how it went.
What you’ll do
- Recruit, schedule, train, and recognize volunteers across our programs, and keep volunteer records accurate.
- Plan and run corporate and group volunteer events — including packing events with partners like MassMutual — as well-planned experiences, not one-off activities.
- Build and maintain relationships with employer partners and the agencies that receive the support.
- Coordinate seasonal drives, like back-to-school and holiday efforts, as part of the regular volunteer calendar.
- Keep pantry and program volunteer coverage dependable, with paid staff backup so volunteers are never overcommitted.
- Build dashboards and reports on participation and engagement, spot trends like retention and repeat participation, and turn what you find into clear recommendations.
- Work closely with program staff so volunteer work connects to the services it supports.
What you bring
- Two or more years in volunteer management, event coordination, community engagement, or related work.
- Strong planning and organizational skills, and the ability to run several events and groups at once.
- Comfort building relationships with corporate partners, agencies, and volunteers.
- Clear writing and speaking.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace, and comfort with spreadsheets, reporting tools, and volunteer or event platforms.
Experience with corporate volunteer programs, or familiarity with the Pioneer Valley nonprofit community, is a plus.
