Position Summary
The Senior Finance Director owns financial planning, forecasting, management analysis, and finance-function leadership. This role turns reliable accounting records into forecasts, scenarios, and recommendations for leadership and the Board. The Finance Manager owns accounting operations and financial statement preparation; the Senior Finance Director reviews those outputs and uses them for planning and decisions rather than routinely performing transaction or close work.
Primary Responsibilities
- Own short- and long-term cash-flow forecasting and year-end revenue, expense, and operating projections.
- Develop conservative, expected, and optimistic scenarios; update assumptions as fundraising, grant, and spending conditions change.
- Lead the annual budgeting process, set assumptions and timelines, and recommend the final organizational budget to leadership.
- Determine how much revenue the organization needs to raise and by when, considering operating needs, cash timing, restrictions, and reserve goals.
- Define how restricted funds, committed costs, cash balances, and unrestricted spendable resources are presented for decision-making.
- Analyze organization-level trends, material variances, unusual results, and emerging financial risks; present recommendations and options.
- Own finance content for leadership and Board reporting, using financial statements and schedules prepared by the Finance Manager.
- Set the framework for grant financial oversight, including risk thresholds, forecasting expectations, and reporting standards.
- Partner with fundraising, grants, and program leaders on revenue assumptions, grant risks, resource allocation, and financial implications of decisions.
- Supervise the Finance Manager; establish expectations for close timing, reporting quality, documentation, and escalation.
- Approve finance policies, internal-control design, role assignments, and material workflow or system changes.
- Assess the completeness, accuracy, and reasonableness of financial information without reperforming routine accounting work.
Qualifications
- Significant experience in financial planning, analysis, budgeting, or nonprofit finance.
- Strong understanding of nonprofit revenue, restricted funds, grants, cash flow, and financial statements.
- Demonstrated ability to create forecasts, models, and financial scenarios and translate them into recommendations.
- Ability to identify inconsistencies and risks and exercise sound judgment about materiality and detail.
- Strong spreadsheet and financial-modeling skills.
- Clear communication with non-finance staff, organizational leaders, and governing boards.
- Experience improving financial systems, controls, and processes and supervising finance staff.
- Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
