Position Summary

The Manager of Volunteer Engagement is primarily responsible for building and maintaining relationships with key contacts at United Way corporate partners, accredited community-based organizations, and other non-profit organizations in United Way’s service area to facilitate the connection of volunteers with engagement opportunities in the community. This position is also responsible for facilitating in person and virtual Immersive Learning opportunities that build empathy, educate participants around community issues/needs and inspire them to act. This position will work as an integral member of the volunteer engagement team and collaboratively with multiple fundraising teams to create and execute strategies to maintain and grow the engagement of participants in United Way’s volunteer and engagement programs and initiatives. This position also proactively creates, promotes, and executes volunteer engagement experiences and opportunities (for both individuals and corporations) that effectively support United Ways mission and goals and increase participants’ affinity for United Way.


Position Duties & Responsibilities

  • Employee Engagement:
  • Develop, manage, and execute strategies to engage employees of partner companies in a variety of volunteer and employee engagement activities.
  • Act as the primary Volunteer Engagement activity owner for two workplace giving teams. Work alongside fundraising teams to understand their community engagement needs and be able to align them with Untied Way initiatives and community needs. Utilize knowledge of successful types of engagement offerings to enhance engagement strategies of corporate partners.
  • Act as the primary Volunteer Engagement activity owner for all internal team engagement requests. Assess goals and needs of the individual teams and place with partner organizations accordingly.
  • As needed manage logistics for projects related to corporate volunteer and engagement experiences, including but not limited to managing communications, setting up experiences with community partners, participant registration, ordering supplies (if applicable), executing the experience and follow-up communication.
  • Coordinate, manage and facilitate immersive learning experiences that simulate difficult decisions and situations faced by individuals and families living in or one step away from poverty for corporate partners to educate and create empathy.

  • Volunteer Management
  • Promote and execute ongoing and episodic volunteer, advocacy and engagement opportunities that contribute to the advancement of United Way’s mission, organizational and community impact goals.
  • Work with members of Volunteer Engagement team to ensure the successful coordination of volunteer needs for United Way signature events and activities (Elevate, Thought Leadership Events, Annual Celebration, Go All IN Day, etc.).
  • Serve as an internal resource for United Way staff on volunteerism, training, and placement of volunteers.

  • Relationship Management
  • Develop and maintain regular contact with community partners, community-based organizations, and volunteers. Identify and communicate with appropriate United Way team members regarding opportunities to leverage these relationships more broadly.
  • Partner with Impact division to enable volunteer recruitment and engagement plans. Identify opportunities for community collaboration.

  • Communication
  • Ensure timely and effective communication with internal and external stakeholders related to creating and executing volunteer and engagement experiences, through email, phone calls and in-person meetings.
  • Be knowledgeable about United Way’s work in Central Indiana and be an effective and compelling communicator of the same to advance engagement and brand value.

  • Data Management:
  • Responsible for communicating with workplace fundraising team on participant tracking and ownership of tasks and responsibilities as a part of the volunteer placement and stewardship process.
  • Ensure the capture and input of information about participants from volunteer and engagement activities, as outlined in the Volunteer Engagement Planner SOP.

  • Annual Goals:
  • Achieve established team and individual goals created annually in partnership with your leader. Work with other members of the United Way team to ensure goals reflect and align and contribute to the broader goals of the organization.

Flexibility:

  • Perform special assignments and other work, on an as-needed basis.

Qualifications

This individual reads and interprets documents such as operating instructions and procedure manuals. Routinely writes detailed reports and correspondence and responds to questions and/or complaints. Routinely speaks effectively before groups of customers, clients, and managers and/or employees of organizations. Routinely solves practical problems and deals with a variety of concrete variables in situations where standardization exists. Can interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Individuals must be able to lift a minimum of 25 pounds, push, pull and assemble materials. Must be able to drive a van and load and unload materials. Makes day-to-day and/or daily decisions used to support strategic direction. Decisions often require thought and are structured. Decisions tend to be short term (one year or less) and usually moderate to high cost.

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor's degree preferred. Associates degree with 1-3 years of experience or 3-5 years’ equivalent experience in project management, volunteer management, business, or other related field required.
  • Two years of experience in volunteer management is preferred. Knowledge of the central Indiana community and the human service sector is preferred.
  • Experience with Hands on connect, Salesforce database or other similar volunteer management and CRM systems is preferred.
  • Ability to facilitate small and large group informational and interactive sessions required.
  • Proficiency in computer skills and attention to detail are essential.
  • Effective time management skills and the ability to think strategically are required to meet deadlines and goals.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills are crucial for success.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and a strong reputation for integrity and professionalism.
  • Must have the ability to prepare performance reports, manage a diverse group of donors and volunteers, handle projects and workload efficiently, and engage constructively with other members of the United Way UWCI team.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Work experience may substitute for education requirements on a case-by-case basis.
