The Distribution Engineering Team Lead is responsible for coordinating the work of designers and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the design team. This role provides leadership, technical guidance, and support to ensure projects are completed efficiently, accurately, and in alignment with company standards.
Team Leads play a key role in mentoring and developing team members by facilitating training sessions, sharing technical knowledge, and helping designers stay current with industry standards, technologies, and best practices. They also assist in onboarding and training entry-level designers to ensure consistency in knowledge, skills, and performance across the team.
In this role, the Team Lead evaluates the strengths, experience, and specialized skills of individual team members to effectively assign work packages, tasks, and project responsibilities. Team members may specialize in areas such as permitting, construction prints, cost inventory, surveying, or pole foreman activities. The Team Lead must maintain a broad understanding of these functions to effectively guide and support the team.

Key Responsibilities

- Promote and support the United Utility Safety Program.
- Understand, support, and uphold policies outlined in the United Utility Employee Handbook.
- Ensure projects are completed efficiently while maintaining high standards of accuracy and quality.
- Assist with training initiatives and technical development when requested.
- Support additional projects or assignments as needed.
- Stay informed of changes in industry standards, technologies, and methodologies.
- Keep supervisors informed of project progress, task completion, and any issues impacting the team.
- Conduct risk assessments and practice effective risk management when working in the field.
- Provide clear direction, guidance, and leadership to team members.
- Coach and mentor team members while addressing and resolving performance or behavioral challenges.
- Review assignments and deliverables to ensure accuracy, completeness, and quality.
- Delegate responsibilities appropriately based on team capabilities and workload.
- Support the development and implementation of company policies, procedures, and processes.
- Participate in meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities.
- Collaborate with supervisors to secure the resources needed to support team operations.
- Serve as a point of contact for communication and coordination with other teams to resolve integration or interface issues.
- Coordinate the review, presentation, and release of design layouts, construction drawings, pole analysis, and related documentation.
- Maintain positive team dynamics to ensure productivity and alignment with project goals.
- Facilitate collaboration and problem-solving among team members.
- Step in when necessary to help resolve issues or remove obstacles impacting team progress.
- Motivate and inspire team members to achieve performance and project objectives.
- Escalate issues that cannot be resolved within the team to the appropriate leadership.
- Provide guidance to the team in alignment with supervisor direction and company objectives.
Key Qualifications:
- 2-5 years of Distribution engineering specific experience.
- Bachelor's degree or 4 years of related experience.
- Excellent communications skills both verbal and written.
- Work collaboratively with key stakeholders internal and external.
- Demonstrate a high degree of creativity, foresight, and judgment in anticipating and solving engineering issues, determining project requirements, organizing projects and developing standards and guidelines.
