U. S. Steel’s Minnesota Ore Operations includes two iron ore mines in northern Minnesota. At the Minntac Facility in Mountain Iron, we are seeking a Utility Technician to join our lab team.
The Utility Technician job is an entry level position and a core component for our workforce as one the of world’s largest steel producers. The Utility Technician operates equipment and performs tasks that support the various production and service units. As a Utility Technician you will perform general labor duties that include the use of torches, shovels, and other hand tools. You will also operate some mobile equipment, in a heavy industrial environment. The Utility Technician also supports and assists in maintenance of plant equipment.

Job Responsibilities:
- Responsible for procuring and preparation of samples of product.
- Perform laboratory tests including pre- and post-analytic phases. Produce accurate and reliable data, interpret results and recommend actions if sample shows flaws.
- Document all activities, produce detailed reports, and insert and retrieve data.
- Follow methodologies in carrying out routine tasks and adhere to correct procedures, policies and health/safety guidelines. In addition, maintain work area and equipment.
- Handle, transports and processes product and materials with the use of basic hand tools.
- Lifting/transporting pellet samples is required.
- Works with and around materials that may be hot, heavy or sharp, and hazardous chemicals.
- Works in various areas of the plant location. Dependent upon the area, environmental conditions can be hot, cold, dirty, greasy, wet, and noisy.
- Required to work near large industrial equipment.
- High School Diploma or GED
- Working experience as a lab assistant/sampler and must be familiar with automated laboratory equipment.
- Computer literacy/experience with Microsoft Excel and Laboratory Information Systems
- Accuracy and close attention to detail with strong analytical judgment.
- The position requires rotating shift work, which will include Saturdays and Sundays, and holidays.
- The position requires overtime work as needed.
- Adherence to safety procedures/guidelines at all times. Safety is our core value which requires you to wear safety protection such as hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, protective clothing, boots with metatarsal protection, and when necessary, respirator equipment.
- The position requires punctuality, consistent attendance, and self-direction for the success of the operations.
- Must pass a pre-employment digital assessment test.
- This is a safety sensitive position requiring drug and alcohol testing.
