Position Summary
The Youth Performance Manager role is focused on assisting athletes in the Under-19 (U19) age group with the transition into performance sailing, achieving success in competition, and developing skills and experience that will enable future success. This includes working with sailors, coaches, clubs, and class associations to support the health of the U19 “Performance” level of the Youth Performance Pathway, with an emphasis on the Performance (Youth Worlds) boat classes. This position prioritizes performance development for youth competitors and coaches and works in coordination with the Youth Competition Manager to implement performance programming via US Sailing programs, events and communications.
This role requires proficiency in the following areas:
- Coaching: Design, plan and execute effective group or individual training tailored to ability level and goals.
- Coach Development: Provide support, resources, and mentorship to coaches and sailing program leaders. Facilitate growth and develop expertise within the coaching community.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of advanced sailing technique and racing strategy.
- Leadership: Play a leadership role in youth and performance sailing community, generating buy-in from participants and stakeholders.
- Event Management: Coordinate the planning and execution of events such as regattas, training camps, clinics, and other youth racing events.
- Communication: Clear, timely, and comprehensive communication with participants and supporters.
- Teamwork: Work closely with staff and volunteer leadership to ensure the success of each program and event, including US Sailing Committee members, Event Chairs, host clubs, and US Sailing staff.
- Customer Service: Provide a positive, constructive US Sailing experience to all athletes, parents, volunteers, professionals, organizations, and other sailing community members.
- Organization: Maintain detailed records and establish efficient workflows, strong administrative skills.
What you’ll be doing:
The primary areas of responsibility for the Youth U19 Performance Manager include:
- US Youth Worlds Team, ODP U19 camps and clinics, and early talent ID for the transition into the Olympic Development Program (ODP) Olympic Classes.
- Coach development in the U19 Performance classes (ILCA 6, ILCA 7, i420, 29er, Nacra15, iQFOiL Youth, Formula Kite).
- Implement practical, hands-on training for new and experienced coaches focused on the U19 Performance classes.
- Develop the network of U19 Performance coaches through in-person and remote coach development events.
- Support clubs and teams that are growing in the U19 Performance classes.
- Utilize the platform of US Sailing’s existing regattas and clinics to facilitate and promote the pathway transition of sailors from the "Racing Development" classes into the U19 "Performance" classes. This includes:
- Try-it-out clinics within the USA Junior Olympic Sailing Festival series
- Event coaching at US Sailing Championships
- Engage with the ICSA to support the ODP/Olympic pathway participation throughout college/in tandem with ICSA programming.
Who you are:
- Five or more years professional experience working in the sailing, coaching or sport management industry.
- Considerable knowledge of sailboat racing and the sailing industry.
- Possess strong personal communication skills (written and verbal)
- Possess strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and be process oriented
- College undergraduate degree, or equivalent experience.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point. Experience with WordPress, graphic design, and registration and budgeting software are encouraged.
- Belief in the Olympic movement
- Appreciation for the sport of sailing
- Strong preference given to candidates who can work out of the US Sailing headquarters in Bristol, Rhode Island.
- Must have flexibility to occasionally travel and work non-traditional hours. Weekends may be required.
