Here's a Summary Of Responsibilities

The Physiologist delivers athlete-centered physiological performance support for elite athletes and National Governing Bodies (NGBs) as part of the Applied Science team. Working within an interdisciplinary performance model, the role designs and implements physiological assessment, monitoring, and testing strategies that enhance athlete readiness, training adaptation, and competitive performance across USOPC training centers, NGB training environments, national team camps, and competition settings.

The Physiologist contributes to athlete profiling, performance diagnostics, and data-informed planning processes, translating insight into integrated sport performance strategies and practical recommendations that enhance athlete preparation and long-term performance development. Working collaboratively with strength and conditioning, sports medicine, nutrition, psychology, biomechanics, and performance professionals, the role helps build sustainable and repeatable performance environments through cross-disciplinary collaboration, applied learning, and alignment with Games preparation priorities.

Performance Delivery

• Deliver physiological performance support for elite athletes across USOPC training centers, NGB environments, national team camps, and competition settings.
• Implement physiological assessment, monitoring, and testing strategies that inform athlete preparation, training adaptation, and competitive readiness.
• Provide applied physiological expertise to athletes, coaches, and performance staff to support training design, recovery strategies, and competition preparation.
• Translate current research and applied sport science evidence into practical recommendations that enhance athlete performance and resilience.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary performance staff to integrate physiological insights with strength and conditioning, sports medicine, nutrition, psychology, biomechanics, and performance innovation.
• Provide physiological support at national and international competitions and contribute to athlete preparation for major events including World Championships, Pan American Games, Parapan American Games, Olympic Games, and Paralympic Games.
  
  

Performance Insights

• Conduct athlete physiological profiling processes through laboratory and field-based testing, monitoring, and performance diagnostics. Analyze and interpret physiological data to inform athlete performance planning and decision-making for athletes, NGBs, and across service providers.
• Contribute to the development and implementation of sport-specific physiological testing methodologies. Ensure the validity, accuracy, and reliability of physiological testing protocols and monitoring systems.
• Translate physiological insights into applied recommendations to enable integrated sport performance planning and evidence-based decision making.
• Collaborate with data analytics, performance innovation, and other sport science disciplines to enhance the use of performance data within athlete support environments.
• Contribute to cross-sport learning by sharing applied insights and performance trends within the Applied Science team.

• Support the development of applied physiological practice within the physiology team through collaboration and knowledge sharing.
• Provide mentorship to interns, fellows, and developing physiologists as assigned.
• Participate in professional forums, conferences, and educational activities to advance applied physiological practice.
• Contribute to the development and dissemination of educational resources that support coaches, athletes, and performance staff.
• Support the maintenance and development of high-performance training environments that enable effective physiological assessment and monitoring.
• Foster productive and collaborative working relationships with NGBs, coaches, interdisciplinary performance staff, and internal divisions to enhance system-wide service delivery.

Here are the skills and experience you'll need to be effective:

• Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Physiology, Sport Science, or a related field
• Master’s degree or PhD in Exercise Physiology, Sport Science, or related field preferred
• 5 years’ experience delivering physiological support in elite or high-performance sport environments
• Experience conducting and interpreting physiological testing and athlete monitoring to inform performance planning strategies and decisions
• Experience working with interdisciplinary performance environments, including working collaboratively with coaches and support staff
• Experience supporting national team camps, elite training environments, or major international competitions preferred
• Experience conducting physiological testing, monitoring, or athlete profiling processes within elite sport environments preferred
• Experience contributing to applied learning initiatives or professional education activities (forums, conferences, etc.) preferred
• Strong knowledge of exercise physiology principles including energy system development, fatigue mechanisms, recovery, and training adaptation
• Ability to conduct laboratory and field-based physiological testing and monitoring
• Ability to interpret physiological data and translate physiological concepts into practical recommendations to inform athlete preparation and performance planning for athletes and coaches
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build productive relationships with athletes, coaches, and interdisciplinary performance staff
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills within complex and collaborative high-performance systems
• Demonstrated understanding of athlete profiling, performance diagnostics, and monitoring practices
• Knowledge of specialized physiological domains relevant to high-performance sport systems (e.g., environmental physiology, altitude preparation, respiratory evaluation) preferred

Here's Some More Information You Need To Know

• Hiring pay range $100,000 - $110,000 per year.
• This Full-Time, Exempt position is intended to work 40 hours per week.
• Bonus: This position will be eligible for the Annual Incentive Award Program, which has a 15% target. The USOPC may change or eliminate this program at any time at its sole discretion.
