Summary

The United States Attorney's office serves the 40 northern counties of Ohio. Our office is responsible for enforcing federal criminal law, which includes a wide range of crimes dealing with national security, public corruption, civil rights, drug trafficking and firearms offenses, among others. Our office is actively engaged in the community, ensuring the rights of victims, working with schools, numerous law enforcement agencies to prevent crime and keep Northern Ohio safe.

The United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Ohio is seeking attorneys with civil litigation experience. This vacancy will fill positions in our Cleveland and Toledo offices.

Our Civil Division defends the United States, its agencies and federal employees when they are named as defendants in civil suits. The civil division brings affirmative actions on behalf of the United States in areas as diverse as protecting the environment, ensuring fair housing and addressing health care fraud, recovering tens of millions of dollars in waste, fraud, and abuse each year.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Conditions of employment

  • You must be a United States Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
  • J.D. degree and active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) required.
  • Must reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district specific information.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least 1 year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience.

United States citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Ideal qualifications include at least three (3) years of post-J.D. experience, preferably with an emphasis on civil litigation in federal courts.

Applicants should have strong academic credentials, superior legal research and writing skills, quick analytical ability to accurately and precisely articulate critical case-related issues, courtroom experience, good interpersonal skills, the ability to work in a supportive and professional team environment with client agencies, support staff and other attorneys, and a demonstrated commitment to public service.

Applicants must possess excellent computer skills. Experience with automated research, electronic court filing, and various word-processing systems, including strong proficiency in Microsoft Word, is required.

You must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement.

Salary Information

Assistant United States Attorney's pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $76,748 to $180,078 including 17.06% locality pay (Toledo) and $80,137 to $188,031 including 22.23% locality pay (Cleveland)

Travel

The AUSA may be required to travel throughout the Northern District of Ohio to attend court proceedings, interview witnesses, attend meetings, and to participate in training at the Department of Justice's National Advocacy Center in Columbia, South Carolina. AUSAs selected for the Toledo office may be required to travel to Cleveland, OH for training and other district events.
