Director of Buildings and Grounds

The United South Central School District is seeking a full-time (1.0 FTE) Director of Buildings and Grounds to join our team at USC Public Schools. This is a 12-month position responsible for overseeing the maintenance, safety, and overall operation of district facilities and grounds to support a safe and effective learning environment for students and staff.

Position Purpose:The Director of Buildings and Grounds is responsible for the overall maintenance, safety, and functionality of all United South Central School District facilities and grounds. This includes supervising custodial and maintenance staff, managing building systems, coordinating facility projects, and ensuring that all district property is safe, clean, and operating efficiently.

Essential Functions

Facilities Management

  • Oversee the daily operations and long-term maintenance of all district buildings and grounds, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and structural systems.
  • Develop and implement preventative maintenance plans and schedules.
  • Respond to facility-related emergencies and coordinate timely resolutions.
  • Ensure proper upkeep of the school campus including parking lots, sidewalks, athletic fields, and outdoor spaces.
  • Maintain records of inspections, repairs, and major maintenance work.

Staff Supervision

  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate custodial and maintenance personnel.
  • Coordinate work schedules and approve time off to ensure adequate staffing coverage.
  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and professional development opportunities to assigned staff.

Project Planning & Oversight

  • Plan and coordinate facility projects, renovations, and repairs.
  • Work with contractors, engineers, and architects as necessary.
  • Solicit and review bids according to district purchasing procedures.
  • Monitor project timelines, quality of work, and compliance with applicable codes and regulations.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure all facilities meet federal, state, and local health and safety regulations.
  • Coordinate inspections, fire drills, boiler operations, water testing, radon monitoring, and asbestos compliance.
  • Maintain safety documentation including Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and OSHA-related records.
  • Serve as the district lead for indoor air quality and integrated pest management plans.

Budgeting & Purchasing

  • Develop and manage the annual buildings and grounds budget.
  • Track expenditures and authorize purchases for maintenance and custodial supplies.
  • Work with the district business office on long-term capital improvement planning.

Facility Use & Equipment Management

  • Coordinate facility use for school activities, athletics, community events, and rentals.
  • Maintain a facility calendar to ensure staffing and cleaning needs are met.
  • Oversee district maintenance vehicles, snow removal equipment, and grounds machinery.
  • Coordinate regular servicing and repairs of equipment.

Qualifications Profile

Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills for successful performance will be considered.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid Minnesota driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain or work towards a Boiler License.
  • Strong working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, and general building maintenance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supervising custodial or maintenance staff in a school or institutional setting.
  • Familiarity with safety compliance systems and building codes.
  • Experience with facility management software or computerized maintenance management systems.
  • Experience in facilities maintenance, building operations, or a related field.

Physical and Work Demands

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to climb ladders, work in confined spaces, and perform physical maintenance tasks.
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions and industrial maintenance environments.
  • Occasional evening or weekend hours for emergencies or special events.

Salary Range

$55,000 – $75,000 dependent on experience.
