Job Overview

United Resource Project (URP) is seeking dependable, compassionate, and professional Residential Aides to join our team. Residential Aides help oversee the daily operations of our confidential emergency transitional shelter while creating a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment for individuals experiencing homelessness and housing instability.

This role combines resident support, shelter operations, documentation, and light housekeeping to ensure the shelter operates safely and efficiently. Residential Aides work closely with residents by providing encouragement, connecting them with community resources, and maintaining a supportive environment where individuals can begin taking steps toward greater stability.

The ideal candidate is reliable, able to work independently, communicates professionally, exercises sound judgment, and has a passion for serving others.

United Resource Project (URP) is a nonprofit organization serving individuals and families throughout Hampton Roads who are experiencing homelessness, housing instability, and other hardships.

We provide emergency temporary shelter, food, clothing, hygiene assistance, and connections to housing, employment, healthcare, and community resources that help individuals move toward greater stability and self-sufficiency.

Current Open Shifts

Part-Time

  • Wednesday: 4:30 PM – 12:30 AM
  • Saturday: 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM

Additional shifts may become available based on organizational needs.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise daily shelter operations during assigned shifts.
  • Welcome new residents and assist with check-in, orientation, and explaining house rules.
  • Create and maintain a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment for all residents.
  • Monitor resident activity and address concerns using good judgment and professionalism.
  • Build positive relationships with residents while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Assist residents with housing resources, employment opportunities, SNAP, Medicaid, identification documents, transportation resources, and other community services.
  • Connect residents with mental health, substance use recovery, financial education, workforce development, and other supportive services.
  • Complete required documentation, including intake forms, end-of-shift reports, incident reports, and other shelter records accurately and on time.
  • Distribute food, hygiene items, linens, clothing, and other essential supplies as needed.
  • Maintain inventory and assist with receiving and organizing donations.
  • Perform routine cleaning, laundry, sanitizing, and housekeeping duties to maintain a clean and welcoming shelter.
  • Monitor building security and immediately report maintenance issues, safety concerns, or emergencies.
  • Communicate professionally with residents, coworkers, volunteers, community partners, and management.
  • Attend required staff meetings and trainings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Required

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Basic computer and documentation skills.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds and perform light housekeeping duties.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.

Preferred Experience in any of the following is preferred but not required:

  • Homeless services
  • Emergency shelters
  • Human services
  • Behavioral health
  • Social work
  • Healthcare
  • Residential programs
  • Customer service
  • Case management

CPR and First Aid certification is a plus.
