This position is a Bargaining Unit position with the IBEW Local Union 111.

RATE OF PAY: $56.87 per hour
LOCATION: Brighton

Position Purpose and Objectives:

Under the general supervision of the Fleet and Warehouse Manager, the Mechanic performs a wide variety of tasks to maintain all company vehicles and equipment in top operating condition by making necessary repairs, adjustments, and carrying out a regularly scheduled maintenance program.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Repairs and maintains all company vehicles and equipment using automotive mechanic tools, machinery, and equipment as needed or with prescribed schedules.
  • Performs services at multiple facilities and may travel regularly. 
  • Lubricates vehicles and equipment and changes oil in accordance with prescribed schedules, as needed, or required. 
  • Prepares daily reports on all maintenance and mechanical work and materials used. 
  • Requisitions and maintains inventory records for vehicle parts, lubricants, fluids, tires, and accessories. 
  • Schedules outside contract work, including, but not limited to, windshield, emissions, and other maintenance activities, as directed.
  • Paints vehicles, equipment, and tools. 
  • Fabricates metal equipment and accessories as directed using hand tools, welders (TIG/MIG), and other fabrication tools as needed.
  • Inspects vehicles and installs state inspection stickers and maintains required OSHA/FMCSA vehicle inspection records on a daily, monthly, and annual basis.
  • Continuously maintains a clean garage working area, including benches, floor, and the surrounding area. Informs department managers on vehicle and equipment conditions.
  • Responds to emergencies as needed/directed.

Secondary Job Functions:

  • Creates, expands, and maintains professional and productive working relationships with peers and stakeholders. Works collaboratively with colleagues and fosters a spirit of cooperation and inclusion in the workplace.
  • Performs other such duties as may be requested or assigned to fulfill the needs of United Power in the interest of good management practices.

Minimum Qualifications:

A high school diploma or equivalent, plus vocational training in mechanical repair work and advanced automotive training.

Must have a minimum of six (6) years of documented, well-rounded experience in repairing automobiles, light and heavy trucks, construction machinery, and equipment. Industry standard certifications are preferred but not required.

Must have a valid Colorado driver’s license or the ability to obtain one.

Must have or have the ability to obtain a CDL-A following the one hundred eighty (180) day probationary period.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: 

  • Must be capable of lay-out and fabrication of metal equipment and accessories from sketches or drawings. 
  • Must have demonstrated abilities using computerized engine analyzer equipment, front-end alignment, tire balancing and light alignment. 
  • Must be able to maintain, overhaul and rebuild engines, large and small gasoline and diesel, with computerized, solid state or standard ignition. Must know fuel systems, both injection and standard.
  • Must be able to maintain and diagnose transmissions, manual and automatic, including 3-speed to 13-speed manuals and automatics; overhaul and rebuild drive lines and differentials on 2-, 4-, and/or 6-wheel drive vehicles, including no slip and 2-speed differentials; and rebuild exhaust systems.
  • Must know, understand and have the ability to apply all OSHA/FMCSA rules and regulations to safely perform the job. 
  • Must know and be able to apply CPR/first aid techniques. 
  • Must have the ability to operate a two-way radio under established procedures and FCC rules.
  • Must be able to react to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
  • Must have knowledge of aerial lift inspection and maintenance processes.

Supervisory Duties:

No Supervisory Duties. May direct the work of the Utility Worker, Mechanic Shop Assistant, and other personnel assigned to the garage operation.

Essential Physical and Mental Demands:

  • Occasionally lifts up to one hundred and forty pounds (140 lbs.) with assistance, occasionally carries up to sixty-five pounds (65 lbs.), and occasionally pushes and pulls up to seventy pounds of force (70 lbs.) while performing the job.
  • Frequently required to operate controls of the vehicles and computerized equipment requiring the use and dexterity of fingers, feet, and hands.
  • Constantly necessary to stand, walk, bend, and balance; frequently necessary to stoop, crawl, crouch, kneel, squat, twist, grasp, and reach; and occasionally necessary to climb. 
  • Ordinary talking and hearing are necessary when communicating with other employees in person, on the two-way radio or on the telephone. It is necessary to be able to distinguish sounds while working on engines.
  • Seeing near is frequently necessary when working on vehicles. Seeing far, depth perception, color vision, and field of vision are required for driving a motor vehicle, with or without corrective lenses or eyewear.
  • The Mechanic must have alertness, precision, ingenuity, problem-solving, analytic ability, spatial perception, auditory discrimination, tactile discrimination, memory, creativity, concentration, judgment, reasoning, initiative, patience, and visual discrimination. Abilities that occasionally will be required are persuasiveness, olfactory discrimination, imagination, and aesthetic sense.

Working Conditions:

Ninety percent (90%) of the time is spent working indoors and the remaining ten percent (10%) is done outdoors while occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.  This position requires regular exposure to high noise levels from machinery and tools, necessitating the use of appropriate hearing protection. Occasionally, there is exposure to vibration when working on a vehicle.

While working outdoors and in the garage repairing vehicles, the Mechanic will often be exposed to fumes, odors, dust, mist, and gases.

Various chemical, mechanical, and low-voltage electrical hazards may be present while performing work.

Basic mechanic/hand tools are supplied by the employee for their use; specialty tools are supplied by the Company.
