Primary function of a Survey Party Chief:
Responsible for leading a field crew in performing surveying duties that include construction layout, data collection, and boundary measurements. The Survey Party Chief will oversee day-to-day operations of survey projects, ensuring accuracy and efficiency in data gathering to support engineering and heavy civil construction projects.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Provide supervision and direction to survey crew members, ensuring accuracy and quality control.
- Coordinate with project managers and field personnel to complete project-related survey tasks.
- Conduct field surveys to establish baselines, elevations, layout, and other geodetic measurements.
- Perform construction layout on bridges, highways, foundations, and other civil structures.
- Perform and oversee data collection for topographic, boundary, planimetric, and construction staking surveys.
- Analyze legal records, plats, deeds, and other documentation to determine property boundaries.
- Verify and compute survey data, including grades, alignments, and coordinates.
- Maintain and download field notes, sketches, maps, reports, and other relevant documentation.
- Operate and maintain survey equipment including GPS, total stations, data collectors, and robotic instruments.
- Adjust surveying instruments to ensure proper calibration and accuracy.
- Communicate survey findings and coordinate with engineering and construction personnel.
- Maintain survey truck and inventory of tools and equipment.
- Ensure field safety and compliance with all applicable regulations.
- Train and mentor junior survey crew members.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications & Experience:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in surveying or related field preferred
- 4–5 years of progressive surveying experience and minimum 2 years as a Party Chief preferred
- Familiarity with SCDOT, NCDOT, or GADOT surveying standards preferred
- Experience with Robotic Total Stations, GPS, and data collection equipment and software
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans and perform layout with accuracy
- Strong mathematical, organizational, and communication skills
- Proficient in downloading/uploading data, keeping field notes, and maintaining survey records
- Ability to adapt to new technologies including terrestrial laser scanning
- Must be reliable, detail-oriented, and capable of independent decision-making in the field
- Physically able to work outdoors in various terrains and climates
- Valid driver’s license with clean driving record required
REQUIREMENTS: ALL Applicants must be:
- 18 years of Age
- Able to pass a Drug Test
- Legally eligible to work in the US
Additional Requirements for Craftworkers:
- Must have own transportation to and from jobsite every work day (driver's license required)
- Must provide own hand tools (excluding power tools)
- May be expected to travel where the project requires (multi-state opportunities)
