JOB SUMMARY
The Non-Profit Accountant – Grant Specialist is a grant focused accounting professional responsible for the financial management of federal, state, and private foundation grants. This position oversees the full grant accounting lifecycle, ensuring compliance with funder requirements, accurate tracking of restricted funds, and timely, audit ready financial reporting.
This role is central to maintaining fiscal accountability, funder trust, and organizational sustainability. The ideal candidate brings deep nonprofit grant accounting expertise, exceptional attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively with program and development teams while honoring Indigenous values and community impact.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES· Manage grant accounting from award through closeout, including setup, monitoring, reporting, and reconciliation · Track and report on restricted and unrestricted funds in compliance with grant agreements and nonprofit accounting standards · Maintain accurate financial records in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting principles · Monitor grant budgets and expenditures to ensure allowability, accuracy, and alignment with approved budgets · Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual grant financial reports, reimbursement requests, and supporting schedules · Maintain complete and organized grant documentation, audit trails, and compliance records · Partner with program managers to support grant‑compliant budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning · Assist with annual audits, single audit preparation (if applicable), and IRS Form 990 reporting · Collaborate with development and program teams to align financial reporting with narrative and outcomes‑based grant reports · Support internal financial controls and continuous improvement of grant accounting processes
QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or related field Minimum three (3) years of nonprofit accounting experience, with a strong emphasis on grant accounting Demonstrated experience managing government and foundation grants Strong understanding of restricted fund accounting and grant compliance requirements Proficiency in nonprofit accounting software and financial reporting tools Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills Ability to manage multiple grants, deadlines, and reporting requirements simultaneously Commitment to UIATF’s mission, values, and Indigenous community engagementPreferred Experience with federal and state grants Familiarity with Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200) and/or single audit processes Experience supporting multi program, multi funder organizations Background working with Native serving organizations, tribal entities, or culturally based nonprofit organizations
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position requires the ability to stand, walk, sit, and use hands and arms for routine tasks. Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds is required. The work environment is indoors, with moderate to high noise levels during events
