The Foundry Engineer is responsible for driving continuous improvement in cast part quality and process efficiency across the foundry. This role focuses on tooling evaluation, gating and riser design, pilot program management, and root cause analysis of casting defects. The Foundry Engineer will also serve as the primary user of casting simulation software and take ownership of gating system development for new and legacy parts. This position plays a key role in supporting new job launches, participating in early tooling and process discussions, and ensuring readiness for production. A strong presence on the plant floor is expected, with a hands-on approach to troubleshooting, validation, and ongoing improvement of foundry operations. The Foundry Engineer partners with Quality, Production, and Metallurgy teams to identify process issues, validate solutions through testing, and implement permanent improvements. Occasional audits and operator training are also expected.Daily ResponsibilitiesActively support new job launches by assisting with pre-production tooling reviews and early process planning.Serve as the primary user of casting simulation software; use simulations to evaluate and improve gating and riser designs.Analyze foundry scrap reports; identify trends and prioritize root cause follow-up with engineering-based solutions.Lead engineering reviews and initiate work orders for improvements in pattern and core box tooling.Provide direct, hands-on support to production teams by troubleshooting casting issues on the floor.Maintain and update process documentation such as core, molding, and grinding instructions in Epicor.Liaise between foundry operations and the quality department to resolve immediate technical concernsWeekly ResponsibilitiesManage and document pilot runs: create schedules, design gating, coordinate production trials, review results, and oversee destructive testing when required.Attend scrap review meetings and present corrective actions based on engineering analysis and simulation insights.Provide ongoing technical support to address recurring casting or process issues and implement sustainable improvements.Generate weekly status reports summarizing pilot activity, tooling performance, gating design updates, and scrap metrics. Periodic / As NeededDesign and revise gating and riser systems for new and existing parts, validating results through simulation and shop floor feedback.Perform dimensional and visual inspections of nonconforming parts to determine root causes and corrective actions.Audit foundry operations to ensure adherence to standard work, safety practices, and quality procedures.Train and coach operators and technicians on process changes, defect recognition, and improved methods.Lead or contribute to cross-functional safety, quality, and productivity improvement initiatives.Maintain accurate technical documentation related to tooling, gating, and casting processes.Communicate casting quality issues and resolutions to supervisors and stakeholders clearly and promptly.Perform other duties within the Quality Department as requiredQualifications (Minimum)Associate’s degree in engineering, foundry technology, or related field; or 3–5 years of applicable experience in a metal casting environment.Strong understanding of foundry processes, gating/riser design, and root cause analysis methodologies.Experience using casting simulation software, with the ability to lead gating design and validation for new and legacy parts.Demonstrated ability to support new job launches, tooling reviews, and pre-production planning.Proficient in reading technical documents, work instructions, and safety guidelines.Ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues on the foundry floor in collaboration with production and quality teams.Strong communication skills with the ability to prepare reports and present findings to cross-functional groups.Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word).Experience with Epicor or similar ERP systems is a plus.Physical RequirementsMust be able to stand and walk for extended periods.Frequently required to use hands for tool or material handling.Regular lifting and movement of materials.Visual requirements include near/far vision, color distinction, depth perception, and focus adjustment.Work EnvironmentExposure to loud noise, vibration, airborne particles, and extreme heat is frequent.Requires the use of PPE, including but not limited to safety glasses, hearing protection, and heat-resistant gear.Company DescriptionUnited Employment Group, Inc. is a search and placement firm specializing in Concrete Products and Construction, Metals, Refrigeration, Engineering/Surveying and Plastic Industries.
