Steel Service Center
The Logistics / Material Coordinator is responsible for planning, coordinating, and monitoring the transportation and delivery of steel products to customers while supporting efficient material flow throughout the service center. This role serves as a key liaison between customers, sales, production, warehouse personnel, and transportation providers to ensure on-time deliveries, accurate shipments, and high levels of customer satisfaction.
The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced steel processing and distribution environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate daily inbound and outbound shipments of steel products, including plate, sheet, coil, tube, structural steel, and value-added processed materials.
- Schedule and dispatch company-owned trucks and/or third-party carriers to meet customer delivery requirements.
- Monitor shipment status and proactively communicate delays or service issues to customers, sales representatives, and management.
- Prepare and review shipping documentation, including bills of lading, packing lists, delivery receipts, and freight invoices.
- Ensure all shipments comply with customer specifications, company procedures, and applicable transportation regulations.
- Work closely with warehouse and production teams to prioritize orders and optimize delivery schedules.
- Verify freight rates, audit carrier invoices, and support freight cost control initiatives.
- Maintain accurate records within the ERP, transportation management, or inventory systems.
- Coordinate special delivery requirements, oversized loads, and customer-specific routing instructions.
- Track key logistics metrics such as on-time delivery performance, freight costs, and carrier utilization.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
- 2 years of logistics, transportation, dispatch, supply chain, or customer service experience.
- Experience coordinating shipments in a manufacturing, metals, steel, distribution, or industrial environment preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Outlook.
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
Preferred
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business, or related field.
- Experience with ERP systems such as SAP, Oracle, Epicor, Dynamics, or industry-specific steel service center software.
- Knowledge of flatbed transportation, steel loading practices, and freight regulations.
- Understanding of inventory management and warehouse operations.
