Diesel Mechanic (Certified)
Compensation: $27 - $42 per hour overtime
Position Summary
United Dredging is seeking an experienced Diesel Mechanic to support maintenance and repair operations for heavy equipment, diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and related machinery used in dredging and excavation operations. This role is responsible for advanced diagnostics, repairs, preventative maintenance, and field service support while maintaining high standards for safety, quality, and equipment reliability.
The ideal candidate has strong troubleshooting skills, experience working on heavy equipment and diesel-powered systems, and the ability to work independently in demanding shop and field environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform advanced diagnostics and repairs on diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and heavy equipment
- Complete major component repairs including engines, transmissions, hydraulic pumps, and drivetrain assemblies
- Utilize OEM diagnostic software and electronic troubleshooting tools
- Perform preventative maintenance and equipment inspections
- Troubleshoot and repair excavators, loaders, trucks, trailers, pumps, dredges, and support equipment
- Support field service operations including emergency breakdown response and job-site repairs
- Maintain accurate repair records, maintenance documentation, and parts usage tracking
- Mentor and support junior mechanics and technicians
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
- Travel to field job sites as needed for repairs, mobilization, and operational support
Qualifications
Required:
High school diploma or GED
- 5 years of diesel mechanic or heavy equipment technician experience
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and diagnostics
- Experience performing major equipment repairs and troubleshooting
- Ability to read schematics, technical manuals, and wiring diagrams
- Experience working in shop and field environments
- Ability to work independently in physically demanding conditions
Preferred:
- ASE, OEM, or Diesel Technician certifications
- CDL Class A license
- Welding and fabrication experience
- Experience with Caterpillar, Cummins, John Deere, or similar OEM diagnostic systems
- MSHA or OSHA safety certifications
- Experience working on dredges or heavy equipment operations

Schedule & Compensation
- Full-time, non-exempt position
- Typical schedule averages approximately 50 hours per week, including overtime opportunities
- Estimated annual earnings: $74,000 β $118,000 depending on experience, certifications, overtime, travel assignments, and hours worked
Work Environment
This position works in both fabrication shop and industrial field environments with exposure to heavy equipment, outdoor conditions, noise, dust, fuels, oils, and physically demanding tasks. The work is physically demanding, requiring lifting up to 75 lbs, extended standing and walking, climbing, bending, and occasional work at heights or in confined spaces. Frequent travel to active job sites, including emergency repair situations and extended assignments, may be required particularly during first 6 months of employment.
