Overview
Community Schools are public schools that serve as hubs of academic, social, and health support for students, families, and the broader community. Walt Whitman Middle School—operating as the only Middle School Community School in Fairfax County—partners with United Community and Opportunity Neighborhood to deliver integrated supports that promote student achievement, family stability, and thriving communities. The Community School Coordinator leads the implementation, alignment, and coordination of the Community School strategy at the school site. This is a 12‑month, full-time United Community position housed at Walt Whitman Middle School, reporting to both the Chief of Programs and the School Principal. Responsibilities include coordinating academic enrichment, family engagement, mentoring, food access programs, health support, and community partnerships that advance Opportunity Neighborhood goals.
Essential Functions Performance Measures
- Conduct initial and annual community needs assessments and develop a schoolwide support plan.
- Collaborate with the Whitman CSC to align services as students transition from elementary to middle school.
- Expand, coordinate, and integrate support services delivered by community partners.
- Lead the school mentoring program (Recruiting, training, matching mentors and mentees).
- Develop and manage the after‑school enrichment program.
- Recruit and manage volunteers, including local businesses and sponsorship partners.
- Support students experiencing attendance, behavior, or academic challenges.
- Strengthening family engagement by coordinating education workshops and leadership opportunities.
- Work with the principal to establish and maintain a Community School Advisory Council.
Keys/Predictors of Success
- Needs assessment and support plan completed and underway by winter break.
- Sustain five or more community partnerships throughout the school year.
- Maintain a mentoring/tutoring program with at least 20 active mentor–mentee matches.
- Operate a robust after‑school enrichment program.
- Demonstrated increase in parent and caregiver engagement.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree with at least three years’ relevant experience in education, youth development, or human services.
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.
- Strong communication and relationship building skills with diverse stakeholders.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Experience working with youth and families in diverse communities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and communication platforms.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.
Travel
Travel within a 3–5-mile radius to United Community locations and partner sites; mileage reimbursement may be provided.
Pay: Up to $60,000.00 per year
