Overview

The Part-Time Lead Adult ESL Teacher supports United Community’s Progreso Center for Literacy and Citizenship by providing high-quality English as a Second Language instruction to adult learners while helping train, guide, and monitor volunteer and part-time instructors. This position plays a key role in strengthening instructional quality, supporting consistent classroom practices, tracking learner progress, and ensuring that ESL programming is responsive to the needs of immigrant and multilingual adult learners.

Program Context

The Progreso Center provides adult ESL, citizenship education, and related support services for immigrants and refugees in the community. ESL classes are designed to help adult learners improve English communication, build confidence, strengthen workforce readiness, and participate more fully in daily life, employment, and civic engagement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach adult ESL classes using approved curriculum, lesson plans, and instructional materials appropriate for multiple English proficiency levels.
  • Support the planning and delivery of engaging, practical lessons that strengthen speaking, listening, reading, writing, digital literacy, and workforce communication skills.
  • Assist with training, onboarding, and coaching volunteer and part-time ESL instructors on curriculum use, classroom expectations, learner engagement, and adult education best practices.
  • Observe ESL classes and provide constructive support to instructors to promote consistency, quality, and culturally responsive instruction.
  • Help monitor program implementation, including attendance, student participation, assessment completion, classroom needs, and instructional follow-up.
  • Support student placement, pre- and post-assessments, progress tracking, and documentation needed for program evaluation and reporting.
  • Collaborate with Progreso staff to identify student needs, address barriers to participation, and connect learners to appropriate United Community programs or community resources.
  • Prepare or adapt teaching materials, handouts, activities, and classroom resources to meet the needs of adult English learners.
  • Maintain regular communication with instructors, staff, and program leadership regarding class progress, challenges, successes, and recommended improvements.
  • Promote a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive learning environment for adult learners from diverse cultural, educational, and linguistic backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching English as a Second Language to adults, preferably in a community-based, nonprofit, or adult education setting.
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles, culturally responsive teaching, and strategies for working with multilingual learners.
  • Experience supporting, mentoring, or training volunteer instructors, tutors, classroom aides, or instructional staff.
  • Strong classroom management, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to use curriculum materials, assessments, attendance tools, and basic data tracking systems with accuracy and consistency.
  • Comfort using technology for instruction, communication, and program documentation.
  • Commitment to serving immigrant communities and supporting learners with varied educational backgrounds and life experiences.
  • Bilingual ability, especially English/Spanish, is preferred but not required.

  • Ability to build positive relationships with adult learners, volunteers, staff, and community partners.
  • Patience, flexibility, cultural humility, and respect for confidentiality.
  • Ability to work independently while also contributing to a collaborative program team.
  • Strong attention to detail for attendance, assessments, progress notes, and reporting support.
  • Willingness to work a flexible part-time schedule, including possible evening classes or occasional meetings.
