Job Overview

United Community seeks a full-time Computer Center Assistant to support adult learners as they build the digital skills needed for education, employment, family engagement, and daily life. The Computer Center Assistant will help manage the day-to-day operations of the computer center, provide patient and accessible technology support, assist learners with basic computer tasks, and create a welcoming learning environment for adults with varying levels of digital literacy.

This position is ideal for someone who is comfortable with technology, enjoys helping adults learn at their own pace, and understands the importance of digital access as a pathway to opportunity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Welcome adult learners and provide respectful, culturally responsive assistance in the computer center.
  • Support learners with basic computer functions, including logging in, using a keyboard and mouse, accessing email, navigating websites, completing online forms, saving and printing documents, and using Microsoft Office or similar applications.
  • Assist learners with access to online learning platforms, virtual classes, digital assessments, job search tools, and community resource applications.
  • Provide one-on-one and small-group digital literacy support, reinforcing skills taught in classes or workshops.
  • Teach beginner-friendly digital literacy classes and workshops for adult learners, including basic computer skills, internet navigation, email, online safety, Microsoft Office, and job search technology.
  • Prepare simple lesson plans, handouts, practice activities, and step-by-step instructions that support adult learners with varying levels of computer experience.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and productive computer center environment.
  • Monitor computer use, promote appropriate technology practices, and help learners follow center policies and procedures.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting for computers, printers, internet access, headphones, keyboards, mice, and other equipment.
  • Document technology issues, learner usage, attendance, supply needs, and recurring learner support needs.
  • Coordinate with program staff and IT support to report equipment problems, software issues, and needed repairs or updates.
  • Assist instructors and program staff with computer-based learning activities, assessments, workshops, and special projects.
  • Train and support instructors, volunteers, and program staff on computer center procedures, commonly used learning platforms, digital literacy resources, and technology tools used in adult education classes.
  • Provide classroom technology support for teachers, including setting up equipment, helping troubleshoot during instruction, and reinforcing digital learning activities.
  • Help maintain inventory of technology equipment, supplies, printed materials, and learning resources.
  • Support outreach, registration, scheduling, and communication related to computer center activities as needed.
  • Perform other duties assigned to support United Community’s adult learning and workforce development goals.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree, technical training, or coursework in education, information technology, human services, or a related field preferred.
  • At least one year of experience providing customer service, technology support, tutoring, teaching assistance, or program support.
  • Experience teaching, tutoring, facilitating workshops, or training adults in a classroom, lab, or community-based setting.
  • Comfort using computers, email, internet browsers, printers, video meeting platforms, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to explain technology concepts clearly and patiently to adults with beginner-level digital skills.
  • Ability to develop and deliver clear, practical instruction for adult learners with different learning styles, language backgrounds, and confidence levels.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work respectfully with adults from diverse cultural, linguistic, educational, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to manage multiple learner requests while maintaining a calm and supportive environment.
  • Commitment to confidentiality, professionalism, and United Community’s mission.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with adult learners, English language learners, job seekers, immigrants, or community-based education programs.
  • Bilingual ability in English and Spanish, Arabic, Dari, Pashto, Amharic, or another language commonly spoken by United Community participants.
  • Familiarity with digital literacy tools such as Northstar Digital Literacy, online job search platforms, or adult education learning systems.
  • Experience assisting with online forms, benefit applications, job applications, resumes, email accounts, or virtual learning platforms.
  • Experience training teachers, volunteers, or staff on technology tools, online learning platforms, or classroom technology practices.
  • Basic understanding of workforce development, adult education, or community resource navigation.
