Instructor - Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP)
Schedule: 16 hours per week, maximum/ Hybrid** 50% in person - 50% work remote

POSITION SUMMARY: The Instructor will be under the direct supervision of the Education Specialist. The Instructor is responsible for providing a safe, caring, and enriching opportunity for youth enrolled within the Summer Youth Employment Program. The Instructor will implement a six-week project-based learning experience, utilizing UAU’s educational and work-readiness curriculum throughout July and August, that will help participants strengthen their work readiness skills. Instructors will provide synchronous instruction to a cohort of at least 25 Summer Youth Employment Program participants, carefully documenting participant attendance and participation throughout the program.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (INCLUDED BUT NOT LIMITED TO):
- Actively participate in pre-program training and mid-summer professional development activities
- Coordinate and implement a meaningful student-centered learning experience during the months of July and August
- Supervise participants and lead classroom discussions via Zoom, Google Classroom, and in-person workshops, as directed
- Implement UAU’s project-based learning curriculum that includes activities within the lesson plan for a balanced program of facilitation, presentation, and participation time
- Provide participants with clear instructions on projects, assignments, and learning objectives
- Attend and supervise youth at in-person activities, trips, or events in the community, as directed, particularly on Thursdays and/or Fridays.
- Establish a professional rapport with participants by responding to inquiries within a 24-hour time frame
- Actively promote teamwork and group-oriented activities
- Record youth participation, attendance, and project completion according to UAU and DYCD guidelines
- Promote work readiness skills and help youth explore their career interests
- Conduct surveys to gauge participants interests, needs, and/or concerns
- Provide daily updates to the Education Specialist
- Participate in end-of-program/post-program debriefs and evaluation activities
- Attend SYEP team meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities, both virtually and in-person, as applicable to role
- Assist with related advisory and/or departmental duties and projects as needed
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED required; Bachelor’s Degree or higher preferred
- Must be 18 years of age or older at the time of hire
- 2 years of experience in youth services or working with youth from various populations, preferred
- Must possess a Valid driver’s license – non-expired
- NYS certification or license in Education, preferred
- Must have daily access to a reliable mode of transportation, preferably a motor vehicle
- Demonstrates operational knowledge and proficiency of remote work/remote learning technology, including Zoom, Google Meets, Google Classroom, and the Internet
- Must have consistent access to high-speed internet
- Demonstrates flexibility and a fluency for adapting to meet the needs of participants
- Demonstrates ability to conduct and complete work independently, including meeting deadlines, while contributing to a collaborative team effort
- Willing and able to take initiative and allow for a flexible work schedule; including some nights and occasional weekends.
- Demonstrates understanding and value of individuals’ different capacities, cultures, and abilities
- Must be available to work the duration of the six week program
- Respect for diverse racial, socio-economic, ethnic, academic, religious, and cultural backgrounds and identities
- Experience teaching and/or supporting youth with intellectual or developmental disabilities, a plus
- Bilingual, a plus
