What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Religious Exploration position at UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST CHURCH OF THE MONTEREY PENINSULA?
The Unitarian Universalist Church of the Monterey Peninsula (UUCMP) is seeking a part-time (approx. 20 hours per week) Director of Religious Exploration.
Our programming for children and youth is based on the 6 Values and 8 UU Principles and aims to:
● Transform the lives of our children and youth as well as the adults in the community.
● Promote deeper intergenerational relationships in classes, within the congregation, and in the larger world.
● Provide a safe and welcoming place for our children and youth to explore Unitarian Universalist values and their own values, share their ideas, build their self-esteem, and consider their roles in the world we share.
● Embolden our children and youth with tenets true to our guiding principles and support them in actively taking part in building a better world we dream about.
Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
● Strong skills in recruiting, working with and coordinating volunteers
● Prior training and experience working with children in an educational and/or
religious setting is expected
● Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, including public
speaking
● Willingness to embrace and respect a diversity of spiritual paths
● Strong organizational and administrative skills
● Working knowledge of world religions and religious philosophy is highly preferred
● College degree preferably in the area of education or religious studies
● Basic competence with computers and communications technology, including use of social media to engage key audiences.
Supervision of RE staff and Community Communication
● Recruit, train, supervise and support both paid and volunteer teachers and helpers.
● Support teaching teams in preparing lesson plans, reference materials, gathering supplies, answering questions.
● Be available Sunday mornings to answer teacher questions, welcome new
families, take attendance, provide snacks, address any classroom/parent issues.
● Communicate with congregation about RE program using a variety of media
including weekly web site and email updates as well as monthly newsletter and bulletin board updates.
● Innovate, Facilitate, and Serve as a Spiritual Leader!
Responsibilities with the support of the Committee on Family Ministry and the
Ministers:
● Work with the Committee to further develop the RE program, select curricula
for each church year, and contribute to a strategic vision for growing the
participation of young people and adults in the RE program.
● Review RE curricula regularly including new curricula developed and
publicized through UUA, Liberal Religious Educators Association (LREDA), etc.
● Publicize the RE program goals and activities through the monthly and weekly newsletters, and other means (bulletin board displays, church announcements, mailings, parent newsletter, etc.).
