Position Summary
A Carman Helper assists skilled labor in railcar repair and maintenance by performing hands-on tasks using industrial tools and equipment, supporting safe operations, and working in physically demanding outdoor and industrial environments while following strict safety procedures.
Primary responsibilities and/or essential functions include, but are not limited to:
- Assisting various plant production personnel performing car repair work involving burning, fitting, grinding, blasting, and painting.
- Using a variety of tools and equipment including but not limited to pneumatic and hydraulic tools, jacks, cutting torches, cranes and forklifts proficiently.
- Completing tasks that may include changing gaskets, hoses, valves, repairing piping, and pipe fitting.
- Acting as a safety watch for tank car entry.
- Maintaining area in a neat and orderly manner and reporting work hazards.
- Ability to understand and follow UTLX operating procedures and policies based on safety and field training.
- Job related knowledge of measuring devices such as rulers.
- Understanding of weight volume, and other units of measurements.
- Able to follow written and/or verbal instructions with minimal supervision.
- Dependable and reliable to show up for scheduled work shifts.
- High School Diploma, GED, or ability to pass a Combined Basic Skills Assessment Test.
- Rail industry experience
- Mechanically inclined
- Experience in a lean manufacturing environment
- The Carman Helper position is performed in an industrial railcar repair environment and involves regular exposure to challenging physical and environmental conditions.
- Work is frequently conducted outdoors and may require extended periods in varying weather conditions.
- Employees are exposed to dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, heat, and noise associated with manufacturing and repair operations.
- The role requires moderate to heavy physical exertion, including lifting and carrying materials, climbing in and out of railcars, equipment, and crane cabs, and working in confined spaces.
- Mechanical aids such as cranes and other powered equipment are routinely used to position heavy objects.
- Manual dexterity and physical coordination are necessary to operate tools, control levers, and safety equipment.
- Employees may experience minor cuts, bruises, or other risks typical of an industrial setting and must maintain constant awareness to safely operate equipment, particularly in confined or elevated areas.
- There is potential exposure to hazardous materials due to leaks or spills.
- Must be willing and able to work in a manufacturing/repair environment, complying with all required personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety protocols
- On-site work arrangement: 5 days a week, with overtime as required.
