Job Overview
The Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art is seeking a CORE Susquehanna AmeriCorps Member to serve as an Environmental Education & Outreach Assistant for a 900-hour half term.
About the Role
The Environmental Education & Outreach Assistant will support the Ned Smith Center's education team in delivering nature- and art-based programming to schools, community groups, and the public. The member will assist with planning, preparing, and leading educational workshops, guided hikes, school programs, camps, and field trips to inspire participants of all ages. The position supports Healthy Futures by promoting physical activity and outdoor engagement, and Capacity Building by expanding the Center's ability to serve more learners and community partners.

Site Location
Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art, Millersburg, PA
Service Term
February (possibly earlier) – August 15th 2026, 900-hours over 26.5 weeks
Description of Duties
- Assist educators with school and community program delivery
- Help prepare and maintain teaching materials, exhibits, and field equipment
- Plan and lead guided hikes and citizen science activities
- Coordinate scheduling with schools and community partners
- Create outreach materials and social media content
- Collect and report data on participants and program outcomes
- Participate in CORE Susquehanna AmeriCorps orientation, convenings, and trainings
Schedule
Schedule is Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM, with occasional evenings/weekends for events if needed. Roughly 37.5 hours/week.
Site Specific Qualifications
- Experience working with youth (teaching, tutoring, camps, etc.)
- Interest or coursework in environmental education, biology, ecology, or art
- Strong communication skills and comfort leading groups outdoors
- Basic computer skills for scheduling, outreach, and reporting
- Ability to perform light outdoor physical activity in various weather

- Driver's License and reliable transportation
- High School Diploma
- FBI, Sex Offenders, State Criminal Background Check
- Commitment to community service and AmeriCorps mission
- Ability to serve as part of a diverse team
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Must be punctual, reliable, and able to receive constructive feedback professionally
- Demonstrates appropriate use of personal and professional boundaries
