What are the responsibilities and job description for the Manager or Senior Manager, Lifecycle Marketing position at Union Plus?
About Union Plus
Union Plus is a nonprofit on a mission: deliver real, money-saving benefits to the 15 million working people across roughly 65 AFL-CIO affiliated unions and their families. From mortgages and education savings to wireless discounts and hardship grants, we put union solidarity to work in members' everyday lives — and we've been doing it for nearly 40 years.
We just selected Iterable as our new consumer engagement platform, and we're using the moment to rethink how we communicate with members. Less batch-and-blast, more behavioral triggers, smarter segmentation, and journeys that actually meet people where they are. That's the work this role gets to help lead.
A Note on Levels
We're hiring one person — and we're posting at two levels because we want the right person, not the right title. If your experience puts you squarely at the Manager level, apply. If you're more senior and want a hands-on modernization role at meaningful scale, apply. We'll calibrate based on the strongest applicant. See the leveling table below for how we'll think about it.
The Opportunity
You'll be a hands-on lifecycle practitioner at Union Plus, living in Iterable every day, building the campaigns and journeys that connect 2.5M email subscribers and 500K SMS subscribers to the benefits they've earned.
Your charter is modernization: take a freshly-implemented Iterable instance and turn it into a real lifecycle program. Leverage behavioral triggers instead of one-size-fits-all sends. Introduce smarter segmentation powered by our BigQuery data. Create and nurture a testing culture that actually informs what we do next. Build a foundation that lets us add channels, e.g., push, in-app, website, etc., when we're ready.
This role reports to the Deputy Director, Website & Email Marketing Strategy, and partners closely with the rest of our marketing & data team and across the Union Plus organization.
What You'll Do
• Live in Iterable. Build, QA, and send campaigns and journeys every day. Templates, dynamic content, workflows, segmentation, you'll know the platform deeply because you're in it consistently.
• Build behavioral journeys. Replace one-off batch sends with triggered, lifecycle-driven programs: onboarding for new opt-ins, re-engagement for lapsed members, behavioral cross-sell across our benefit portfolio, milestone moments, and seasonal programs.
• Make segmentation smarter. Partner with our data team to build audiences that go beyond "all opt-ins" by using BigQuery-sourced behavioral, demographic, and engagement signals, as well as our union-by-benefit eligibility logic thereby ensuring members only see what they qualify for.
• Orchestrate across channels. Today, the role spans email and SMS. As we mature, you'll help design coordinated multi-channel journeys, and shape what comes next (push, in-app, web) as we expand.
• Build a testing culture. Own (or contribute meaningfully to) the A/B testing roadmap: what we test, how we measure it, and how findings turn into permanent changes. Make experimentation a normal part of how we work, not a special project.
• Measure what matters. Track performance in Iterable, GA4, and Grafana. Translate data into clear recommendations for the team.
• Sweat the craft. Proof copy, check links, validate dynamic content, preview across clients, monitor deliverability. Make sure every send lives up to the Union Plus voice: concise, friendly, supportive, lively, trusted, and welcoming.
• Partner cross-functionally. Work closely with the email campaigns team on calendar coordination, the data team on integrations and audience requirements, and benefit partners on co-branded programs.
How We'll Level You
We'll determine your level based on the dimensions below. You don't need to match every Senior Manager criterion to be considered at that level, but the more you can demonstrate, the stronger the case.
ager
Total lifecycle / CRM experience
- Manager: 4–7 years
- Senior Manager: 7–10 years
Iterable experience (required)
- Manager: 1 years hands-on
- Senior Manager: 2 years hands-on, incl. Workflows, Catalog, AI features
Modernization scope
- Manager: Executes modernization initiatives; contributes to roadmap
- Senior Manager: Owns and architects 1–2 modernization workstreams (e.g., testing program, multi-channel orchestration, segmentation strategy)
Data & segmentation
- Manager: Builds audiences from defined logic; partners with data team on requirements
- Senior Manager: Defines segmentation strategy and partners with data team on architecture
Cross-functional reach
- Manager: Coordinates with partners and peers
- Senior Manager: Influences benefit partners and senior stakeholders; acts as informal senior partner to team
Salary range
- Manager: $90,000 – $115,000
- Senior Manager: $115,000 – $140,000
Note: This is not a people-management role at either level. The Senior Manager would act as a senior IC and informal mentor, not a direct manager of others.
What We're Looking For (both roles)
- Hands-on Iterable experience is required. See the leveling table above for specifics. We'll consider strong candidates with deep experience in another modern ESP (Braze, Klaviyo, Customer.io) only if paired with demonstrated Iterable familiarity and a clear path to a rapid ramp.
- A modernizer's mindset. You've moved a program from batch-and-blast to behavioral. You know what works, and you've built it before — onboarding flows, behavioral triggers, smart segmentation, real experimentation.
- Data fluency. You don't need to write production SQL, but you should be comfortable reading dashboards, scoping audience requirements, and partnering with a data team. Familiarity with BigQuery, GA4, or similar is a plus.
- Strong HTML/CSS for email. You can troubleshoot a broken template without panicking.
- Strong writing and editing. You can take a brief and turn it into copy that's clear, warm, and on-brand.
- Project management chops. You can run multiple programs at once and hit deadlines efficiently.
- Mission alignment. You care about working people and organized labor or you're genuinely curious to learn.
Nice to Have
- Iterable certifications (Foundations, Iterable Academy)
- Experience with multi-channel orchestration beyond email/SMS (push, in-app, web)
- Hands-on Google Tag Manager experience including configuring tags, triggers, and variables that feed lifecycle and analytics events
- Familiarity with SMS compliance (TCPA, carrier filtering, A2P 10DLC)
- Experience with CDPs, reverse ETL tools, or BigQuery-as-source-of-truth architectures
- Experience working in or with the labor movement, nonprofits, or membership organizations
Compensation & Benefits
Salary ranges (see leveling section above for placement):
- Manager: $90,000 – $115,000
- Senior Manager: $115,000 – $140,000
Here's the part that's genuinely unusual:
Union Plus offers a benefits package that's increasingly rare and valuable. For an employee with a family, the benefits below can add $15,000–$25,000 in annual value beyond base salary.
- Fully-paid healthcare. Medical, dental, and vision premiums are 100% covered for you, your spouse, and your dependents. Not 70%, not 80%...fully covered.
- Employer FSA contribution. We contribute to your Health FSA on top of paying premiums.
- Traditional pension. A defined-benefit pension plan, the kind that's nearly extinct in the private sector and provides greater retirement security.
- 3% 401(k) match. In addition to the pension, not instead of it.
- Generous PTO and paid holidays.
- Hybrid schedule with our DC-area office.
- Professional development support, including Iterable certifications.
- Meaningful work on behalf of 15 million hard-working union members and their families.
If you've been comparing total compensation rather than just base salary, we think you'll find Union Plus is very competitive.
