Purpose: To prepare nutritious, balanced meals for individuals in a recovery program. Their work goes beyond just cooking — it supports physical healing, emotional stability, and healthy routines that are essential to long-term recovery.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan and prepare nutrient-dense meals that promote recovery, focusing on balanced nutrition and whole foods.
- Follow dietary guidelines for residents with specific health needs (e.g., diabetes, liver support, or mental health stabilization).
- Maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary kitchen environment in accordance with health and safety standards.
- Manage inventory and ordering food supplies within budget constraints.
- Ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to 40 lbs, and work in a fast-paced kitchen environment.
- Respect dietary restrictions (e.g., gluten-free, vegetarian, allergy-friendly).
- Occasionally lead group cooking sessions to build teamwork and healthy habits.
- Support nutritional rehabilitation — rebuilding strength after substance misuse.
- Encourage mindful eating and stable blood sugar, which helps with mood regulation.
- You cannot volunteer in the department you are working in.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Understanding how nutrition supports mood, energy, and brain health.
Credentials and Experience:
- 2 years of experience in a commercial or institutional kitchen; experience in recovery or healthcare setting is a plus.
- Knowledge of nutrition, especially as it relates to addiction recovery and mental health.
- Ability to work in a team and maintain confidentiality.
- Food Handlers Card or equivalent food safety certification (or willingness to obtain).
