JOB TITLE:        MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST             

DEPARTMENT:       LABORATORY              

RESPONSIBLE TO:   LABORATORY MANAGER

JOB SUMMARY:

The Medical Technologist conducts a variety of clinical laboratory tests for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease, and performs related duties, following established standards and practices.

 QUALIFICATIONS / EDUCATION:

Education: Graduate of an approved school for Medical Technologist and proof of having successfully passed an approved Medical Technology examination;  OR graduate of an approved school for MLT program and proof of having successfully passed an approved MT examination;  OR certification as a Medical Technologist by HHS.

Skills: Must be detail oriented; organized; people oriented.  Must have good oral and written communication skills.   Must possess skills and/or abilities to care for patients of all ages.

                        Must possess ability to follow instructions and work according to established procedures.

Experience              At least 1 year of experience as generalist in high complexity testing lab preferred.

AGE OF PATIENTS SERVED:

Infants = Birth – 1 yr                    Adolescent = 13 – 18 yrs

Toddler = 1 – 4 yrs                       Adult = 19 – 65 yrs

Preschooler = 4 – 6 yrs                   Geriatric = 65 yrs

School Age = 6 – 12 yrs

HAZARDS:    Exposure to toxic/caustic/chemicals/detergents/gases.

            Exposure to extreme conditions, hot/cold.

            Exposure to dust/fumes/helicopter.

            Exposure to moving mechanical parts.

            Exposure to potential electrical shock.

            Exposure to x-ray/electromagnetic energy.

            Exposure to high-pitched noises.

            Exposure to communicable diseases and bloodborne pathogens.

WORKING CONDITIONS:     Spends approximately 90% of time inside.  Inside work has good ventilation, comfortable temperatures.

STANDING POSITIONS:     Sitting: 20%      Standing: 40%     Walking: 40%

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:       Light work – lifting 20 lbs maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 lbs.  Ability to lift, push/pull with assistance, the weight of the average patient.  

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Ability to walk, stand, reach, lift.  Good manual dexterity.  Good corrected vision and hearing.

CONTACTS / INTERACTS WITH:    Physicians, Patients/Families, Staff, Volunteers, and Public/Others.
