Cardiovascular Sonographer Job Description
Job Title: Cardiovascular Sonographer (Cardiac Ultrasound Technologist, echocardiographer )
Position Summary
The Cardiovascular Sonographer performs diagnostic ultrasound examinations of the heart and vascular system to assist physicians in diagnosing and treating cardiovascular diseases. This role requires expertise in echocardiography, patient care, image acquisition, and adherence to quality and safety standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform diagnostic cardiac ultrasound examinations (transthoracic echocardiograms).
- Obtain high-quality images and measurements according to established protocols.
- Assist with stress echocardiography procedures.
- Perform Doppler and color flow imaging studies.
- Evaluate image quality and ensure diagnostic adequacy.
- Prepare preliminary technical findings for physician interpretation, if permitted by facility policy.
- Monitor patients during procedures and recognize signs of distress.
- Maintain accurate patient records and documentation.
- Explain procedures and provide compassionate patient care.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot ultrasound equipment.
- Adhere to infection control, safety, and accreditation standards.
- Participate in quality improvement and continuing education activities.
Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography or Cardiovascular Technology program.
- Current credentialing through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (RDCS) and/or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (RCS).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Previous echocardiography experience preferred
- Plus for pediatric echocardiography experience..
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology, and pathology.
- Proficiency in echocardiographic imaging techniques.
- Strong attention to detail and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Excellent communication and patient-care skills.
- Ability to prioritize workload in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to maneuver ultrasound equipment and assist patients with positioning.
- Manual dexterity required for ultrasound scanning procedures.
PRN position must be willing to help on weekends and rotate holidays.
