The Finance Director is responsible for assisting with overseeing the church’s financial operations, ensuring accuracy in accounting, compliance with financial policies, and efficiency in financial management. This role supports the Associate Pastor of Finance by implementing financial strategies, preparing reports, and assist with ensuring the financial stability of the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Operations & Accounting (40%)
Union Church offers a generous compensation package. The salary for this position is commensurate with experience. The Finance Director is responsible for assisting with overseeing the church’s financial operations, ensuring accuracy in accounting, compliance with financial policies, and efficiency in financial management. This role supports the Associate Pastor of Finance by implementing financial strategies, preparing reports, and assist with ensuring the financial stability of the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Operations & Accounting (40%)
- Oversee daily financial transactions, approvals of accounts payables, checks, wires and ACH transactions. Lead month-end and year-end closing, oversee accurate record-keeping and support external audits.
- Assist with all aspects of budget development and ensure alignment with organizational goals. Track and analyze expenditures against the budget and financial metrics for decision-making. Oversee the administration of the church’s corporate credit card program, ensuring proper usage and compliance with financial policies.
- Develop systems to optimize financial workflows and identify and implement financial automation tools to improve efficiency. Provide guidance with creating systems to ensure compliance with nonprofit financial regulations and best practices.
- Provide support in executing financial strategies, provide financial insights and recommendations and perform additional finance-related duties as assigned.
- Financial Acumen - Strong understanding of financial management, accounting principles, budgeting and forecasting.
- Problem Solving and Decision Making – Analytical mindset with the ability to identify issues and implement financial solutions.
- Strategic Thinking – Ability to align financial strategies with Union Church’s mission and goals.
- Integrity and Confidentiality – Commitment to ethical financial management and safeguarding sensitive information.
- Accounting Software Proficiency – Experience with QuickBooks and donation management platforms (e.g., Pushpay, Bill.com, Churchmetrics, Square, etc).
- Financial Reporting and Data Analysis – Strong skills in Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools (e.g., Power BI)
- Regulatory Compliance – Knowledge of nonprofit financial regulations, tax laws and Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (EFCA) standards.
- This description is not all-inclusive; other duties may be assigned as necessary.
- Review and approve financial transactions, including payables and reimbursements.
- Assist ministry leaders with budget-related inquiries and provide financial guidance.
- Prepare weekly giving report for leadership
- Generate and analyze financial reports for leadership meetings.
- Ensure all Stewardship team SOPs and Policies are updated.
- Be present on Sundays to engage with staff and volunteers as needed.
- Support the Stewardship teams as needed.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, departments, and competing deadlines
- Maintain strict confidentiality and emotional intelligence when handling sensitive employee issues
- Sunday–Thursday work schedule, with frequent weekends or evenings as needed
- Occasional travel may be requested
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds (physical demands)
- Ability to stand for extended periods (up to 30 minutes)
