PreK Teacher Assistant 

Job Description

 

Position: PreK Assistant 

FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

Reports to: Director at PreK

Purpose:  Provide support to the teacher in the instruction of students.  This position is responsible to the classroom teacher and/or the school administrators and will carry out such duties as determined by and in support of those teachers.  A wide variety of tasks are performed to support the teacher in the teaching-learning process for students.  

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Gives group instruction and provides individualized instruction as prescribed by the teacher.
  2. Praises and reinforces achievement of students.
  3. Reports student progress to the teacher.
  4. Serves as substitute teacher.
  5. Arranges classroom furnishings and equipment.
  6. Prepares visual aids and duplicates materials.
  7. Reorganizes materials at the end of day.
  8. Serves as proctor during testing. 
  9. Morning and afternoon carpool duties
  10. Lunch and recess monitoring
  11. Classroom monitoring and classroom management
  12. Monitors work assigned by teacher
  13. Individual student support and tutoring
  14. Checks and corrects students' work while in progress and keeps students on task
  15. Instructional preparation/support
  16. Distributes and collects instructional materials
  17. Completes and organizes paperwork and other support documents
  18. Plans and prepares for the instructional activities with the classroom teacher. Contributes to a  positive classroom environment where every child is motivated to achieve.
  19. Assists in escorting and supervising students to other locations.
  20. Assists teachers with non-instructional classroom duties, such as snack, lunch, bulletin boards, and other daily routines.
  21. Secures and organizes classroom supplies.
  22. Assists in reading, storytelling, calendar, and other appropriate activities.
  23. Assists small groups of students in the library, art class, computer lab, etc. as needed.
  24. Prepares instructional materials.
  25. Participates in appropriate in-service activities.
  26. Assists with classroom discipline.
  27. Attends meetings of the school as directed.
  28. Observes student performance and assists students in correcting seat work as it is being done.
  29. Assists the teacher in maintaining the classroom in clean, orderly, and functional condition.
  30. Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with others.
  31. Performs such other tasks and assumes responsibilities as may be assigned by the classroom teacher or school administrator.
  32. Strives to be a desirable example for students in attitude, actions, speech, and dress.
  33. Any other assigned duties.

  1. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  2. Ability to reason, make judgments, and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  3. Ability to utilize positive human relation skills with all staff.
  4. Skills of keyboarding with accuracy at the speed necessary for the position.
  5. Skills in operating a computer with word processing, spreadsheet, and desktop publishing applications.
  6. Knowledge of office practices and procedures.
  7. Ability to compile and summarize information.
  8. Ability to resolve problem situations with sound judgment.
  9. Ability to demonstrate proper telephone etiquette.
  10. Ability to maintain confidentiality in matters relating to the school system.
  11. Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing work assignments.
  12. Knowledge of business letter writing and memos.
  13. Ability to compose correspondences independently.
  14. Ability to work in the absence of supervision.
  15. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Other Responsibilities:  In all cases, the Teaching Assistant will be available for or actively engaged with the students and present in the classroom or with the students, except at the direction of the classroom teacher or supervisor or when specific duties dictate a different setting.  Performs related work as required.  (NOTE:  The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)

Desired Training and Hands-On experience

  1. High school diploma or equivalent degree.
  2. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Minimum Qualifications or Standards required to perform essential job functions:

Physical Requirements: Position requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects.

Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. This includes giving instructions, assignments or directions to parents, students, and staff.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow written and oral instructions. You must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in Standard English.

Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide.

Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate eyes and hands to use the keyboard.

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. You must be adaptable to performing under minimal to moderate levels of stress.

Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk, write and hear.

Assessment: Performance of this job will be assessed annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on assessment of administrative personnel.

Terms of Employment: Salary and work year as established by the Board.
