Role Description
Our client is seeking a Senior Embedded Test Engineer to lead verification strategy and test execution for a cardiovascular medical device as it advances through clinical and early commercial execution.
This role is focused on ownership of embedded system testing across hardware, firmware, and system integration. The ideal candidate will ensure the product is not only functioning as intended, but thoroughly challenged under normal, abnormal, and edge-case conditions so that failures are identified and resolved before reaching production or clinical use.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead manual and automated test activities for embedded systems with a focus on product reliability and release readiness
- Design and maintain test plans, protocols, and test cases for hardware, firmware, and system-level verification
- Own hardware and software integration testing, functional testing, regression testing, and performance validation
- Design and execute tests intended to expose edge cases, abnormal behaviors, and system failure modes before release
- Challenge the system under stress and off-nominal conditions to identify weaknesses before they reach production
- Debug issues using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, JTAG, and other bench-level diagnostic tools
- Write and maintain test scripts and supporting utilities in Python and C
- Build, modify, and maintain test fixtures, harnesses, and bench setups to support efficient validation
- Support root cause investigations and work closely with engineering teams to resolve failures and improve design robustness
- Collaborate cross-functionally with electrical, firmware, mechanical, clinical, and regulatory teams to ensure full system coverage
- Support verification and validation (V&V) activities, including test method development, traceability, and failure analysis
- Document test results clearly and support design control requirements in a regulated development environment
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related field
- 5 years of experience in embedded test, systems test, or verification engineering within medical device or complex electromechanical product development
- Strong experience testing embedded hardware and firmware in a regulated or otherwise complex product environment
- Hands-on proficiency with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, JTAG, and related lab debugging tools
- Experience writing test scripts or automation tools in Python and/or C
- Experience supporting hardware and software integration testing and system-level troubleshooting
- Experience supporting V&V and working within design control frameworks (ISO 13485, FDA 21 CFR 820)
- Demonstrated ability to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve issues across embedded hardware, firmware, and integrated systems
- Experience building or working with test fixtures, harnesses, and bench equipment, including soldering when needed
- Ability to operate in a fast-paced, startup environment with a high degree of ownership
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with cardiovascular or implantable medical devices
- Familiarity with communication protocols such as UART, SPI, I2C, or CAN
- Experience supporting clinical-stage or early commercial products
This is a high-impact role within a lean team, offering the opportunity to take ownership of embedded test and play a critical role in bringing a complex medical device into clinical and commercial use.
