Job Summary: We are seeking an energetic and reliable Afterschool Program Instructor to support the
afterschool program for elementary and middle school scholars at UVSO. The ideal candidate will
have experience working with children and a commitment to creating a positive, engaging, and
supportive environment. The Afterschool Instructor will help with homework support, assist in the
development of activities in the arts, STEM, physical activity, and socio-emotional learning, and
assist in ensuring students are safely transported to and from the program location. The hours for
the position are Monday -Thursday 3-6 PM and Fridays 12:30 PM - 4:30 PM.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Transportation and Student Supervision:
a. Pick up students from their school and safely shuttle them to the afterschool program location.
b. Ensure the safety and well-being of students during transportation and throughout the
afterschool program.
c. Supervise students during arrival, transitions, and dismissal, ensuring appropriate behavior
and safety at all times.
2. Homework Assistance and Academic Support:
a. Assist students with homework, providing support where needed to ensure they complete
assignments accurately and on time.
b. Encourage positive work habits and provide guidance to help students develop good study skills
and academic responsibility.
c. Work with the Afterschool Program Manager to tailor support based on students' academic needs
and goals.
3. Program Support:
a. Collaborate with the Afterschool Program Manager to help implement daily programming, including
activities focused on arts, STEM, physical activity, and socio-emotional learning (SEL).
b. Lead or assist in hands-on, engaging activities that align with the program’s
focus areas, fostering creativity, learning, and physical activity.
c. Support the organization and execution of special events, performances, or projects as needed.
4. Behavior Management and Positive Student Engagement:
a. Assist in maintaining a structured, respectful, and inclusive environment, helping students
engage in activities and interact positively with one another.
b. Use effective communication and conflict-resolution strategies to address behavioral issues and
promote socio-emotional development.
c. Encourage teamwork, communication, and collaboration among students.
5. Collaboration with Staff:
a. Work closely with the Afterschool Program Manager and other staff to ensure the smooth running
of daily activities and provide consistent support to students.
b. Provide feedback to the Afterschool Program Manager on student progress, behavior, and any
challenges that arise during the program.
c. Support staff and volunteers during various activities and events, ensuring that all students
receive the attention and care they need.
6. Administrative Support:
a. Assist with daily attendance, ensuring students are accounted for and that records are kept
accurately.
b. Help organize materials and supplies for activities, ensuring they are well- maintained and
ready for use.
c. Report any issues regarding students, equipment, or activities to the Afterschool Program
Manager.
Qualifications:
• Experience:
o Experience working with elementary and middle school-aged children, preferably in an afterschool
or youth program setting.
o Experience or interest in supporting activities in the arts, STEM, physical activity, and
socio-emotional learning.
• Skills & Knowledge:
o Basic knowledge of child development and the ability to engage children in a variety of
educational and recreational activities.
o Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with students, parents, and
staff.
o Organizational skills to assist with scheduling, event planning, and program logistics.
• Personal Qualities:
o Patient, dependable, and compassionate, with a genuine interest in supporting the development of
children.
o Creative and flexible, able to adapt to changes in schedule or activities.
o Enthusiastic and positive, encouraging children to try new activities and engage in the program.
Education:
A high school diploma or equivalent required; college students pursuing a degree in education,
child development, or a related field are encouraged to apply.
Physical Requirements:
• Ability to lift and carry materials or supplies, as well as assist with physical activities
involving children.
• Must be able to safely transport students, following all required protocols and safety
regulations.
