Basic Function Of Position

The Mobile Fleet Mechanic must be able to perform major and minor tune-ups, maintenance (including welding), and safety inspections, on gasoline, diesel, and other mechanical equipment. Must also be able to work on manual transmissions, differentials, suspensions, chassis systems, cooling, and fuel, electrical and hydraulic systems. Fleet mechanic will be responsible for both heavy and light fleet vehicles and will regularly respond to locations outside of a shop environment to make mobile repairs. This position is required to participate in after hours and weekend call-out on a weekly or monthly basis.

Supervision Received

Works under the general direction and reports to the Fleet Manager. Receives daily work assignments from Lead Mechanic.

Principal Responsibilities

Generalized Mechanic Work Activities:

  • Servicing, repairing, adjusting, and testing light fleet, heavy fleet, utility fleet, moving parts, and equipment which operate primarily based on mechanical principles.
  • Running, maneuvering, navigating, or driving vehicles or mechanized equipment, such as forklifts, passenger vehicles, fire apparatus, etc.
  • Inspecting apparatus, equipment or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.

Mechanic Specific Tasks

  • Adhering to safety requirements, procedures, and general best practices within the industry.
  • Adjusting and maintaining apparatus and vehicles using control and regulating devices.
  • Adjusting, maintaining, and repairing or replacing engines and subassemblies, such as transmissions using hand tools, jacks, hoists, and cranes.
  • Cleaning parts by spraying them with grease solvent or immersing them in tanks of solvent.
  • Cleaning, lubricating, and performing other routine maintenance work on equipment and vehicles.
  • Diagnosing and repairing or replacing water tanks, fire pumps, systems, and piping.
  • Diagnosing faults or malfunctions to determine required repairs, using engine diagnostic equipment such as computerized test equipment and calibration devices.
  • Dismantling and reassembling heavy equipment using hoists and hand tools.
  • Examining parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges.
  • Fabricating needed parts or items from steel and/or sheet metal.
  • Fitting bearings to adjust, repair, or overhaul mobile mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment.
  • Operating and inspecting apparatus or vehicles to diagnose defects.
  • Testing apparatus or vehicles to ensure operating efficiency.
  • Reading and understanding operating manuals, schematics, and technical drawings.
  • Repairing and replacing damaged or worn parts.
  • Repairing emergency lighting or audible notification systems.
  • Scheduling maintenance for industrial machines and equipment and keep equipment service records.
  • Testing apparatus or vehicles after repair or assembly to ensure proper performance and compliance with manufacturers' specifications.
  • Welding or soldering broken wiring, parts and structural members, using electric or gas welders and soldering tools.
  • Maintaining necessary records and forms on work performed through Fleet Management Software system (Fleetio).
  • Ensuring that all UFA parts inventory utilized in vehicle repair is documented in fleet management program
  • Accurately documenting all time engaged on vehicle repairs in fleet management program
  • Completing fleet management program work orders in a timely fashion or when requested by supervisor
  • Assisting Lead Mechanic with completion of MR's for fleet related vendor purchases and repairs when needed
  • Working with the Fleet Data Administrator to ensure accuracy of records
  • Ordering and picking up equipment and vehicle parts as needed
  • Performing other duties of a similar nature or level

Typical Decisions

  • Inspect and determine repairs needed to various heavy/light duty apparatus and equipment. Perform repairs to apparatus and equipment as needed.

Minimum Experience And Qualifications

  • Valid Utah Class B CDL (Must obtain within 6 months of hire)
  • UFA Level I EVT Certification is required for entry level mechanic (Certification must be obtained within 18 months of hire):

  • At least four years of experience as a mechanic, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • The preferred candidate will possess knowledge of: basic business mathematics and business English; mechanical, and hydraulic systems associated with heavy fleet equipment; methods and techniques for servicing, repairing, adjusting, and testing machines, devices, moving parts, and equipment which operate primarily on the basis of mechanical principles; fleet maintenance schedules an

Desirable Qualifications

  • Completion of a two (2) year vocational or apprentice program
  • The following Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certifications are not required for entry level mechanic; however, they are required to advance to the corresponding levels listed below:

  • Newly hired employees that meet the ASE/EVT requirements listed above will be placed in the level that corresponds with their current certifications

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in shop, fire station bay or in a field service setting. Can be exposed to varying weather conditions. Work schedule is Monday through Friday, routine hours; however, after hours and weekend call out on a weekly or monthly basis will be required. Work activities vary widely including fleet maintenance, field and classroom training, attending meetings and frequent driving both light and heavy apparatus. Work may include infrequent response to emergencies.

Physical And Mental Job Requirements

To perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the essential job functions satisfactorily. Incumbents may be subjected to dusts, gases, poor ventilation, extreme temperatures, workspace restrictions, intense noises, and travel. This position also requires the ability to bend, kneel and stand for extended periods of time and to possess dexterity of hands and arms in order to perform job duties

This position requires occasional driving and ability to exert up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and up to 20 lbs. of force frequently and up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.
