Summary
Performs electrocardiograms as ordered by the medical staff.
Responsibilities
- Verifies the existence of an appropriate history and/or examination data in preparation for procedure.
- When determined competent, performs all ECG procedures approved for the position, and as detailed in the position’s Skills Checklist to include, but not limited to: Obtains 12-lead ECG tracings with rhythm strips in routine and emergency situations; Performs IPG tests and associated record keeping; Confirms EKGs in Muse, making changes where indicated; Performs lower venous and arterial studies; Performs treadmill for stress testing, Dobutamine, Adenosine and Persantine, if trained; Performs signal average tests, if trained; Hooks up 30-day Event Monitor, if trained.
- Communicates with patients or their representatives.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skill necessary to provide appropriate care based on the age of the patients served.
- Communicates with team members, physicians, and other care providers regarding diagnostic testing.
- Provides oversight and guidance to students and new staff in regard to ECGs.
- Sets up and/or maintains equipment and work areas.
- Participates in quality assurance and quality improvement activities.
- Takes an active role in self-development.
- Performs miscellaneous duties, as needed.
Other Information
Education Requirements:
- High school graduate or GED.
- Basic Arrhythmia Course. Take and successfully complete the Basic Arrhythmia Course provided by the hospital.
- BCLS certification within 3 months of hire. Recertification required every 2 years.
- Knowledge of arrhythmias and cardiovascular anatomy/physiology upon hire. Patient care experience preferred.
