UNC Health and Careers
Morrisville, NC Full Time
POSTED ON 12/25/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 2/24/2026

Description

Become part of an inclusive organization with over 40,000 teammates, whose mission is to improve the health and well-being of the unique communities we serve.

Summary:

The Manager, Data Governance leads the health system’s data governance program with a strong focus on enabling analysts and business users to find, trust, and productively use data and analytics. This leader builds a collaborative community of data stewards, facilitates standards and definitions across domains, operates change control and change communication processes for data and analytic assets, and advances the metadata and catalog ecosystem. The role requires leading through influence across clinical, operational, and technology teams in a highly collaborative environment. Experience with Epic and Collibra (or similar data catalog tools) are strongly preferred.

Responsibilities:

1) Catalog, Metadata & Lineage

  • Own the data catalog (managed in Collibra): curate domains, oversee governance workflows, improve metadata quality, scale stewardship participation, and integrate with BI/analytics platforms and our new conversational analytics program.
  • Partner with architecture and platform teams to enhance lineage visibility and automate metadata pipelines where feasible.
  • Manage contracts and budgets related to data governance platforms.
  • Champion the creation of Data Products that deliver a coherent model and set of metrics across our full stack of data and analytics platforms.

2) Stewardship, Standards & Documentation

  • Help data stewards document and standardize the assets they own (data elements, metrics/KPIs, reports, extracts, dashboards), including authoritative definitions, quality rules, and lineage.
  • Drive adoption of naming conventions, reference data policies, data quality thresholds, and approval workflows across domains.

3) Change Control & Change Communication

  • Run the change control process for data and analytic assets: intake, impact analysis, approvals, release planning, and post implementation review.
  • Operate a clear change communication cadence (release notes, advisories, stakeholder briefings) to minimize disruption and increase trust in analytics.

4) Community Building & Enablement

  • Grow and facilitate our data steward community across clinical, operational, financial, and research domains; lead councils and workgroups to align definitions, business rules, and standards.
  • Create practical enablement assets (playbooks, quick start guides, office hours, training) to enable analysts and business users to quickly find, understand, and use data and analytics.
  • Establish a shared vision for data governance and actively communicate expectations and responsibilities to stewards and analysts.

5) Policy, Compliance & Privacy

  • Collaborate with Compliance, Privacy, Security, and Legal to ensure governance policies align with privacy and legal requirements (e.g., HIPAA, information security standards) and are consistently followed.

6) Cross Functional Leadership & Influence

  • Lead through influence in a highly collaborative environment, aligning objectives with enterprise strategy, balancing stakeholder priorities, and driving consensus.
  • Maintain strong customer focus—cultivating relationships, gathering feedback, and continuously improving the governance program.
  • Lead our team of data governance professionals, supporting them in growing their skills and careers.

7) Strategy, Planning & Financial Stewardship

  • Develop roadmaps, operating plans, and KPIs for the governance program; prepare budgets; monitor performance and provide summary reports to leadership and analytics governance council.

Preferred experience:

  • Enterprise data governance processes
  • Enterprise data warehouses
  • Epic reporting and analytics tools
  • Data catalog and metadata management platforms
