The candidate for this TEMP position needs a Ph.D. degree within the past eight years or to be awarded PhD degree by May 15, 2025 from an accredited university in one of the following fields: Biology, Biological Sciences, Biophysics, Biochemistry, Chemical Biology, Molecular Genetics, or Cell and Molecular Biology. A strong experimental background with evidence of experimental skills related to biochemistry, molecular biology, and cell biology is preferred. Previous working experience with mammalian cells (e.g., cell culture, immunofluorescence analysis, gene knock-down and/knockout technologies, Comet assays) is preferred, but are not required.

The employee will report to Dr. Shan Yan and will work on research projects through original research, collaboration with other team members in the Yan lab. The employee will also contribute to additional proposal efforts, thereby strengthening UNC Charlotte’s ability to attract external funding. The principal research responsibilities of the employee will be investigating the molecular mechanisms of genome integrity. The employee will confer with Dr. Yan on overall research direction and strategy but will exercise a considerable amount of independent judgment and original thinking in carrying out research that contributes to original knowledge and advances the University’s reputation in research. The employee will publish research results, in collaboration with Dr. Yan in recognized journals.

The Yan lab in Department of Biological Sciences at University of North Carolina at Charlotte is interested in the molecular mechanisms of genome integrity and cancer etiology using Xenopus egg extracts and mammalian cells. In particular, the Yan lab has made contributions to a better understanding of innovative and molecular aspects of DNA damage repair, DNA damage response, single-strand break signaling, and cancer therapeutics (Willis et al., PNAS, 2013, 110:10592-10597; Yan et al., Cell. Mol. Life Sci., 2014, 71:3951-3967; Wallace et al., PNAS, 2017, 114:304-309; Li et al., Cancer Res., 2017, 77:3169-3180; Liu et al., Cancer Lett., 2018, 416:11-23; Lin et al., Nucleic Acids Res., 2018, 46:2479-2494). • Temporary staff employees are ineligible to receive benefits (leave, health coverage, State service credit, etc.). They are, however, covered by Worker’s Compensation provisions.

However, any non-permanent employee hired to work 30 or more hours per week for three months or more (cumulative of all positions, and not designated as variable hour worker), must be offered the chance to enroll in the High Deductible Health Plan, within 30 days of their eligibility. Any non-permanent employee hired to work less than 30 hours per week (cumulative of all positions, or designated as variable hour worker – i.e. student workers) are measured during designated measurement periods. If they average 30 or more hours per week over a designated measurement period, they will be offered the chance to enroll in the High Deductible Health Plan, and will be notified of instructions.
