Teaching – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching (including lab, studio, or production management) may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, and grading student work.
This position:
- Coordinates the implementation of Charlotte Core initiatives across general education courses, departments, and the co-curriculum.
- Oversees the professional development of faculty teaching general education courses and disciplinary courses linked to the Charlotte Core competencies
- Collects and analyzes assessment data related to the Charlotte Core competencies in partnership with the Office of Assessment and Accreditation
- Provides strategic planning and oversight of the communication consultant program
- Supervises SHRA staff
- Supervises graduate students
Duties and Responsibilities
- Bear the primary responsibility for conceptualizing and implementing Charlotte Core programming, curriculum, and assessment related to the four core competencies (Communication, Critical Thinking, Engagement Across Perspectives, and Quantitative/Data).
- Oversee the Communication Across the Curriculum program, providing strategic vision and administrative oversight.
- Coordinate the implementation of all Charlotte Core learning initiatives across general education courses, academic departments, and the co-curriculum.
- Participate in regular and ongoing strategic planning meetings with the University College Faculty Council (UCFC), the Associate Dean for Curriculum, and the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education.
- Support and lead communication and marketing initiatives for the Charlotte Core.
- Identify and recruit new Charlotte Core partner departments and faculty members
- Oversee the professional development of all faculty teaching general education courses and disciplinary courses linked to the Charlotte Core competencies.
- Conceptualize, develop, and implement training structures, materials (e.g., Canvas sites), and programs to support the Core’s competencies.
- Identify, recruit, and enroll participating faculty in development opportunities.
- Coordinate and lead professional development training and programs, or work with faculty to lead them.
- Coordinate the payment of faculty incentives and stipends (if applicable).
- Teach one general education course in the fall semester
- Teach one general education course in the spring semester
- Collect and analyze assessment data related to the Charlotte Core competencies in partnership with the Office of Assessment and Accreditation.
- Identify assessment needs across all Core initiatives.
- Report results of assessment data to appropriate campus partners (e.g., University College Faculty Council, UGE leadership).
- Provide strategic planning and oversight of the Communication Consultant program.
- Work with the CxC Program Coordinator to identify program needs, training, and initiatives.
- Work with the CxC Program Coordinator to develop and carry out viable assessments for the impact of consultants on student learning experiences.
- Provide training and development for faculty mentors and communicate effectively and frequently with them.
- Supervise SHRA staff (2 full-time employees) and graduate assistants (GTAs).
- Develop recruitment, application, interview, and evaluation processes for new GTAs.
- Develop and deliver initial and ongoing training for GTAs.
- Assign, supervise, and review work for all direct reports.
- Conduct annual and 6-month performance reviews and approve timesheets.
UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned masters and/or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.
- Charlotte Core Expertise: 3-5 years of experience teaching within the General Education program at UNC Charlotte.
- Faculty Leadership: Proven track record of leadership in a faculty capacity, such as serving on curriculum committees, chairing departmental tasks forces, or leading faculty peer-mentorship initiatives.
- Pedagogical Knowledge: Demonstrated expertise in evidence-based teaching practices, High-Impact Practices (HIPs), and adult learning principles essential for guiding faculty development.
- Curricular Design: Familiarity with General Education curriculum models and the ability to map course-level outcomes to program-level goals (The Charlotte Core competencies).
- Strategic Planning: Proven experience with strategic planning and policy development within an academic context.
- Assessment Proficiency: Demonstrated experience in the assessment of student learning outcomes, including the ability to interpret data to inform curricular or pedagogical improvements.
- Communication Skills: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with faculty colleagues, department chairs, and campus partners.
- Interpersonal: High level of interpersonal skills required to build collaborative relationships and consensus across a variety of academic departments.
- Technological Proficiency: Experience utilizing instructional or administrative technologies (e.g., Canvas, assessment software) to improve program efficiency or data tracking.
