Job Title: Ophthalmology Receptionist
Reports To: Clinic Manager / Practice Administrator
Position Summary
The Ophthalmology Receptionist is the first point of contact for patients and visitors. This role ensures a smooth and welcoming front-office experience by coordinating patient check-in/out, verifying insurance, managing appointment flow, and supporting the clinical and billing teams. Attention to detail, professionalism, and excellent communication skills are essential.
Key ResponsibilitiesFront Desk & Patient Relations
- Greet and check in patients promptly and courteously.
- Confirm demographic, insurance, and referral information at each visit.
- Manage patient check-out, including scheduling follow-ups and collecting payments.
- Answer and route phone calls, voicemails, and patient portal messages.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and professional front office environment.
Scheduling & Coordination
- Schedule appointments efficiently to balance provider productivity and patient convenience.
- Coordinate surgical, testing, and referral appointments with other offices as directed.
- Communicate delays, reschedules, or urgent needs with technicians and providers.
Insurance & Billing Support
- Verify insurance eligibility and benefits prior to appointments.
- Collect copays, deductibles, and outstanding balances at check-in.
- Accurately post payments and reconcile daily transactions.
- Prepare encounter forms and ensure completeness for billing submission.
Clinical Support & Documentation
- Ensure that all necessary paperwork, consents, and chart notes are complete before patient encounters.
- Assist with scanning documents and maintaining electronic medical records (EMR).
- Communicate effectively with technicians, scribes, and providers to maintain clinic flow.
Teamwork & Compliance
- Uphold HIPAA and confidentiality standards at all times.
- Participate in team meetings and cross-train with other front-office staff.
- Follow established protocols for safety, privacy, and infection control.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent (associate degree preferred).
- Prior experience in ophthalmology, optometry, or medical front office strongly preferred but not required.
- Working knowledge of insurance verification and medical terminology preferred but not required.
- Proficient with EMR systems (e.g., EyeMD EMR, ModMed, or similar) preferred
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Professional, punctual, and detail-oriented.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $17.50 - $24.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40 per week
