General Summary:

The MRI Safety Officer coordinates closely with the MRI Medical Director (with whom resides final authority for all medical decisions concerning MRI).  As such, the MRI Safety Officer is the authority on safe practices within the MRI department and, in the absence of the MRI Medical Director, has authority over all practices within the MRI department as they relate to safety.

Requirements:

  1. Satisfactory completion of formal radiographic technology program in an AMA-approved school and successful completion of board registry by ARRT.
  2. MRSC Certification by American Board of Magnetic Resonance Safety (ABMRS) required.
  3. Preferably a member of either ASRT or MSRT or both.
  4. Minimum of 1 year experience in MRI.
  5. Current BLS certification - Basic life support.
  6. Maintain ARRT certification.
  7. Advanced Certification in MRI with the ARRT or ARMRIT.
  8. Familiarity with the operation of a variety of MRI vendor systems and equipment, concepts, practices, and procedures.
  9. Must have excellent organizational, customer service and problem solving skills.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. In collaboration with the MRI Medical Director, develops, implements, and manages the MRI safety program. 
  2. Accountable for developing and maintaining all MRI Safety policies and procedures including screening and access controls. 
  3. Oversees all MRI Safety education for MRI and ancillary staff and maintains education records in accordance with the established continuous safety training recommendations of the latest ACR Guidance document or appropriate alternative.
  4. Oversees the annual MRI technologist safety competency assessments and assignment of MRI safety levels for all personnel based on organizational approved guidelines.
  5. Maintains Gadolinium-Based Contrast Agents (GBCA) policy per organizational standards and, along with the MRI Medical Director, educates all MRI personnel of latest industry standards for GBCA usage.
  6. Works collaboratively with MRI physicist (s) to maintain optimal image quality, perform medical device testing for safety and maintain organizational approved QA/ QC standards.
  7. Demonstrates an extensive understanding of static and gradient magnetic fields, SAR, burn hazards, optimal patient positioning, acoustic noise hazards, and other MRI Safety concerns.
  8. Accountable for all compliance testing of any equipment to be used in the MRI department, including Zone 4, and schedules all required maintenance.   
  9. Is responsible for MRI facility safety inspections with an approved safety inspector, to include quench pipe inspections and cryogen maintenance- including record maintenance of each.
  10. Reports and appropriately documents all MRI safety and accident records.
  11. Chairs the monthly section meetings and participates in the bi-weekly lead meetings.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.  These may including but are not limited to: Maintaining  a current knowledge base of MRI safety laws, accreditation standards, and standards of practice to ensure maintenance of organizational compliance , staying abreast of current industry safety trends, pursuing self-directed learning and continuing education opportunities, and participating on committees, task forces, and work groups as determined by management.
