Job Summary

The Controller reporting to the Senior Vice President of Finance is responsible for directing UMC accounting functions, overseeing the preparation of GAAP/GASB financials, payroll preparation, tax returns, audits, and monthly and annual financial statements

Job Specific Responsibilities

Daily assignments may include but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate and assist with annual financial audit

  • Collaborate with executive leadership team on review and implementation of new contracts, maintaining existing contracts, and any changes to contractual relationships that impact recording of cost accounting, payroll reporting, or financial data in any way

  • Develop the departmental budget and monitor variances monthly

  • Oversee a team of 5 subordinate staff; responsible for hiring, coaching, training, employee engagement, performance management, and disciplinary actions for staff

  • Oversee payroll process ensuring it is prepared timely and accurately including submission of various deductions such as retirement, payroll taxes, employee reimbursements, supplemental medical benefits

  • Responsible for accounting and supervision of staff in the preparation of the UMC Foundation financial statements monthly and assist with the annual audit

  • Evaluate and assess cash needs for the organization and to maintain the proper cash balances in operating accounts to meet those needs

  • Supervise and monitor accounts payable activities in accordance with financial and internal control policies. Ensure all payments are processed accurately and timely

  • Reviews monthly financial statements for accuracy and to ensure they are in accordance with GAAP/GASB.

  • Maintains supporting accounting/financial information records. Assures that all balance sheet accounts are reconciled and reviewed by the appropriate supervisor to ensure accuracy

  • Assure all journal entries and interfaces from supporting systems are reviewed, approved and appropriate

  • Trains, educates, and explains accounting/financial information to Directors and other stakeholders through informal and formal meetings

  • Monitor compliance with State and Federal regulations related to tax returns, unclaimed property, payroll and related regulations

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or other Business Administration specialty is required.

  • Graduate degree in Accounting, Finance, or other Business Administration specialty, preferred

  • Five (5) years of experience in a leadership role in accounting and finance at an administrative or professional level is required, preferably in a healthcare setting

Required Licensures/Certifications/Registrations

  • CPA certification is preferred

Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of accounting standards accepted by GAAP/GASB

  • Effective communicator, both verbally and in writing; Must speak English fluently

  • Strong skills with information systems including financial systems (Workday), Excel, Word, Access and PowerPoint are required.

Interaction with Other Departments and Other Relationships

This position will interact daily with accounting staff. Frequent contact with department directors and upper-level management for obtaining and reporting information used for decision making

Physical Capabilities

This position requires sitting for extended periods of time, often looking at a computer. Typing, visual and audio acuity is required continuously. Must be able to speak in front of small to medium size audiences.

Environmental/Working Conditions

The position is subject to inside environmental conditions, protection from weather conditions, but not necessarily varying temperature changes.

Salary : $82,000 - $104,000
