I. Major Responsibilities:
- Manages a proactive public relations program designed to increase and enhance the organization's visibility and reputation within and beyond Central Massachusetts. Proactively identifies and pitches potential stories that align with system strategic goals and successfully secures news coverage. Serves as system spokesperson as required.
- Responds to media inquires for information/interviews in a timely and accurate manner, in accordance with established procedures. Ensures department and system leadership are kept informed as appropriate.
- Researches, writes and distributes content including news releases, feature stories, calendar announcements, and pitches to appropriate news media outlets. Ensures posting to other communications channels including the UMMH website, social media channels, etc.
- Provides proactive communication counsel to leadership, physicians, and others. Develops key messaging and strategies enabling these constituents to interface appropriately with the media to advance the organization's goals. Makes appropriate arrangements for interviews with hospital leadership and personnel.
- Participates in monitoring of all media activity and placements related to UMass Memorial, its key constituencies and competitors, as well as issues affecting the health care industry. Assists with timely dissemination of media placements to leadership and other system representatives.
II. Position Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in related field.
- Minimum of five to seven years related experience in media and public relations.
- Prior experience within a health care environment a plus but not required.
- Solid understanding of media and public relations program development and communication strategy.
- Familiarity in utilization of online social media resources.
- Strong writing ability and presentation skills required.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to interact effectively with physicians, administrative leadership at all member organizations, external news media representatives, and community members.
- Must be self-directed with an ability to set priorities and oversee multiple projects simultaneously.
Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
