Job Description Summary Position Overview and Key Responsibilities: Working within the Financial Data Model (FDM) group, within the Office of the Controller, the Accountant will be the subject matter expert for the financial system and will maintain Workday FDM worktags, hierarchies, and requests forms, and support Controller offices of the other campuses in this capacity on the Workday tenant. The Accountant will collaborate with the UMD Project team on necessary updates of configuration, validations, account posting rules, source systems, and business processes for FDM. This role will provide customer service and minimal training, acting as a point of contact, will provide guidance, and will respond efficiently to constituents regarding various functions, worktags, journals, period close, and related reports for both Workday and KFS. The Accountant will be responsible for updating documentation, and providing updates to websites and systems for various system financial process guidelines. This position is tasked with monitoring and clearing transactions through journal entries from various Workday ledger accounts and suspense/continuation activity, working with campus to decrease future rejections and need for corrections. The Accountant is tasked with the uploading of enterprise integration builder (EIB) journals from campus. This position will also be responsible for some month-end steps, and act as main back-up for the entire period close process. The Accountant is an integral part of the team and is responsible for carrying out the aforementioned and similar duties as assigned in an independent manner and with minimal supervision. Physical Demands: Sedentary Work: Primarily desk-based, requiring prolonged periods of sitting while performing tasks such as typing, filing, and using a computer. Repetitive Motion: Frequent use of a keyboard, mouse, and phone, which may involve repetitive hand and wrist movements. Occasional Lifting: Ability to lift and carry office materials, files, and supplies up to 20-25 pounds (e.g., boxes, office equipment). Standing and Walking: Occasional walking to meetings, interacting with staff or faculty, and attending departmental events or presentations. Visual and Mental Acuity: Requires the ability to focus on financial reports, spreadsheets, and documents for extended periods and manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Communication: Frequent verbal communication with staff, faculty, and campus administrators, requiring clear speech and the ability to hear and respond appropriately in meetings and discussions. Minimum Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Experience: Three (3) years of professional accounting experience. Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and internal control practices. Skill in oral and written communication. Skill in the use of Microsoft Office and Google Suite products. Ability to multi-task and prioritize assignments. Ability to acquire, apply and expand knowledge of the University’s policies and operating details for sponsored programs. Additional Job Details Preferences: A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Business Administration is preferred. A strong understanding of accounting principles, including financial reporting, reconciliation, and governmental standards. Experience in financial data management is preferred. Proficiency in Workday, RSTARS, as well as familiarity with various systems like a ticketing tracking system such as CSM, JIRA, or Smartsheets is preferred. Learning new systems and processes quickly is also a plus.
