Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Ulland Brothers, Inc. is a civil/highway-heavy, aggregate, and site development contractor with offices in Carlton, MN, Virginia, MN, and Albert Lea, MN. Ulland Brothers has operated in the construction industry for more than 100 years.

Ulland Brothers is seeking a Heavy Equipment Mechanic to inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair mobile heavy construction equipment used in civil, highway-heavy, aggregate, and site development operations.

This is a union position represented by International Union of Operating Engineers Local 49. Wages and benefits are provided in accordance with the applicable IUOE Local 49 collective bargaining agreement.

Primary tasks and responsibilities

• Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair mobile heavy construction equipment.
• Inspect equipment and perform scheduled preventive maintenance.
• Perform work in accordance with applicable OEM specifications, Company safety policies, and applicable OSHA and MSHA requirements.
• Evaluate equipment condition and make recommendations regarding future repairs and maintenance.
• Communicate effectively with field, shop, dispatch, and management personnel.
• Perform welding and fabrication tasks as needed.
• Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records.
• Participate in required in-person or online training.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

  Required qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Minimum of two years of experience maintaining or repairing similar heavy construction equipment preferred.
• Proven mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability.
• Basic welding skills required.
• Ability to read and understand service manuals, parts diagrams, maintenance instructions, and safety procedures.
• Valid driver’s license and driving record that meets Company insurability standards required.

• CDL preferred.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a DOT medical card, if required for assigned duties, after a conditional offer of employment.

Work environment and physical requirements

• Work may be performed in shop, field, pit, quarry, road construction, and other outdoor construction environments.
• Exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, dust, grease, oil, moving equipment, and active construction sites may occur.
• Occasional overtime, weekend work, and travel to job sites may be required.
• Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, including standing, walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, reaching, working at heights, and lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs.
