HEAD OF PLANT I
SUMMARY: Under general supervision of the Superintendent or designee, the Head of Plant I coordinates and participates in the custodian program at a small school site or district facility. The Head of Plant I position differs from the Head of Plant II position in that day-to-day coordination of the work activities of other custodian staff is limited to one or two evening Custodians assigned, and differs from the Custodian position in that the Head of Plant I is assigned responsibility for all custodial services at the assigned location.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Note: These examples are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed in positions allocated to this class. The examples of work performed are neither restricted to nor all encompassing of the duties to be performed under this job title.) Maintains a clean, safe, and healthy environment, including minor grounds upkeep. Assigns work and coordinates day-to-day activities at least one other full-time, regular classified custodian. Trains substitutes and new hires. Works with site administrator or director on assignments for the betterment and safety of the school/facility. Sets cleaning schedules to ensure adequate coverage by available custodial staff. Ensures that assigned substitute custodians receive instruction on site’s cleaning schedule and current custodial tasks to occur that evening. Determines on a daily basis what special/urgent tasks need to be performed, such as removal of graffiti, in addition to established cleaning routines at the site. Performs minor repairs and maintenance including, but not limited to, cleaning roof gutters, painting, installing shelves, etc. Inspects for and reports the need of maintenance repairs. Performs tasks such as leaf blowing, trash pickup on grounds, knocking down weeds in the parking lot, etc. Arranges rooms with chairs and tables for meetings and activities. Implements and informs others of school security routines. Performs daily security inspections; secures facility; sets alarms. Performs periodic safety inspections on playground equipment, fire extinguishers, fire alarms and the school site in general. Maintains and monitors material safety data (MSD) sheets; labels cleaning agents for safety purposes. Assists site Administration with safety. Requisitions supplies and materials. Provides for the safe and orderly storage of site supplies, hazardous materials, furniture, and equipment. May set up and take down sports equipment. Performs assigned duties in a safe manner. Regularly performs duties assigned the Custodian job class. Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS /REQUIREMENTS: (At time of application) KNOWLEDGE OF/ABILITY TO: Equipment used in the cleaning of floors, walls, and fixtures, such as scrubbers, polishers, vacuums, and rug cleaners. Custodial techniques, such as how to strip and refinish floors. Cleaning materials, disinfectants and equipment used in custodial work. Safe work practices. Read, write and speak English sufficiently to successfully perform required duties. Hear, speak and write to receive and exchange information. Read and follow label directions when using any materials and/or equipment. Exercise extreme caution when using hazardous materials and/or equipment by adhering to the specified warnings. Perform simple maintenance and repair work. Use small power hand tools such as screwdrivers, drills, etc. Learn to operate motorized sweepers, prepare and submit computerized work orders and requisitions, bell clock and electronic alarm systems and HVAC room control settings. Operate heating and ventilating equipment. Plan and carry out work schedules in a timely manner and keep simple records. Perform manual labor, including stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing ladders, lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, walking and standing for long periods of time. Work independently with minimal supervision, making appropriate judgements and taking actions accordingly to accomplish assignments. Flexible and productive in spite of daily interruptions. Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers, supervisors, students and the public.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or equivalent. Additional related experience and/or training that would indicate possession of the above skills and abilities. One year experience as a custodian, preferably with the Ukiah Unified School District or another school district.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Must be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.) Physical strength/agility sufficient to perform a wide variety of frequent physical tasks including moving equipment/furniture and operating equipment. Lift 50 pounds, carry, climb, stoop, bend, reach and perform demanding physical tasks. Indoors and outdoors work environment; subject to noise from equipment operation; regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors, which may require use of protective equipment; subject to driving a vehicle to conduct work. Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of specialized equipment, hand and power tools; seeing to observe needed and completed repairs; climbing ladders and working from heights; reaching overhead and horizontally to shelve and retrieve items in high places; standing for extended periods of time; bending at the waist. Successful passage of post-offer pre-employment physical examination required.
HEAD OF PLANT II:
SUMMARY: Under general supervision of the Superintendent or designee, the Head of Plant II coordinates custodial and building use services, provides day-to-day coordination of work assignments and activities of full-time and parttime custodians assigned to the location, and participates in custodial duties. The Head of Plant II differs from the Head of Plant I in that the Head of Plant II leads other custodial staff and the positions in the class are assigned to a larger elementary or middle school site.
