What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical Sonographer Specialist - Imaging & Diagnostic Services position at uic?
Medical Sonographers operate specialized equipment that transmits high frequency, ultrasound waves in order to produce images of the areas scanned. Sonographers in this series primarily scan abdominal, pelvic, lower and upper extremities areas of the body (such as the spleen, liver, pancreas, uterus, kidneys, or thyroid, etc.), or perform OB/GYN related procedures.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Performs ultrasound scans within the ultrasound section providing complete and accurate imaging for diagnostic assessment of anatomy such as abdomen, pelvis, and small parts.
- Performs advanced or complex exams and assists with clinical procedures.
- Provides physicians with required technical imaging information and in the electronic medical record.
- Monitors the operation of ultrasound equipment, reports service issues, and makes minor repairs.
- Participates in quality assurance tracking for optimal clinical outcomes and for meeting organizational metrics.
- Trains staff in established procedures and new protocols being implemented in the department; reviews imaging and advises staff related to any quality deficiencies.
- May act as a charge technologist to assist the manager including overseeing work, providing technical and operational assistance, and assigning daily work schedules.
- Orientates and evaluates the performance of students or residents on procedures in the department.
- Organizes and coordinates overall patient/research subject flow on a daily basis including outpatients the inpatients.
- Provides technical assistance to researchers pertaining to the use of vascular ultrasound including planning and review of approved protocols.
- Assists with the accreditation application process and selection of images as needed.
- Performs duties at the lower level of this series, as required.
- Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
