What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Laborer - Facilities Management position at uic?
To maintain the existing campus grounds, install new landscape design, maintain athletic fields and remove snow and ice. The position reports to the Grounds Gardener who in turns reports to the Grounds Foreman.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Care for lawns that includes irrigation, mowing with hand mowers, fertilizing, weed control, laying sod, sowing seed and preparing an area for seed or sod.
Sweep up dirt and debris and empty trash containers, collect rubbish left on campus and clean around trash compactors.
Work on athletic fields, which requires stripping of playing surface, dragging infields, setting bases in position and all lawn care procedures mentioned earlier.
Care for trees and shrubs on both campuses. This includes planting, pruning, spraying, watering, cleaning shrub plantings, and weeding.
Care for hedges which includes properly pruning for correct shape and unwanted growth. Care also includes removal of papers and other debris accumulated in the hedges.
Repair walks and drives by using hot and cold patch.
Prepare flower beds for growing seasonal plants such as bulbs in the fall and annuals in the spring.
Work on surface drainage by keeping storm drains and catch basins free of debris during heavy rain storms and ice in the winter months.
Operate utility truck and pick-up truck to carry necessary supplies and get to and from assigned work areas on campus.
Perform related duties as assigned. Maintenance Laborer duties are on a seasonal basis, except sweeping, emptying trash containers, and collecting rubbish.
