What are the responsibilities and job description for the Genetic Counselor position at uic?
Position Summary
This position provides care and services to patients at risk for or diagnosed with a genetic disorder. Educates and advocates for patients and assists them in coordinating necessary medical treatment/genetic testing and provides them with resources when needed.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Evaluate and counsel pediatric, perinatal and adult patients and their families on genetic disorders and diseases pertaining to them.
- Review patient records and test results. Obtain and evaluate patient family history to determine patients at risk.
- Discuss etiology, diagnosis, management, and results with patients and patients’ partners. Recommend and discuss available testing options.
- Follow up on patient medical appointments and lab testing. Review test results and recommends follow-up testing, if needed.
- Determine appropriateness of genetic testing. Provide and secure consent and coordinates the genetic testing.
- Assists in the interpretation of the genetic test results.
- Deliver educational lectures on genetics to residents, students, fellows, and medical personnel at UIC and at other medical centers.
- Performs other related duties and participates in special projects as assigned.
