Position Summary

The Extra Help Staff Nurse I provides direct patient care and takes the initiative to improve patient outcomes by integrating Shared Leadership, Evidence Based Practice, Relationship Based Care, and standards of nursing excellence into clinical practice. This position integrates professional practice model, current standards of practice and clinical experience to provide "quality" patient care as measured by established nursing quality standards and other governing/accrediting health care bodies. The Extra Help Staff Nurse I engages and obtains information from patient and/or family to advocate for the patient, develops an appropriate patient educational plan, and responds to patient's changing needs while sharing information and collaborating with other members of the health care team to promote effective patient care. The Extra Help Staff Nurse I participates in organizational, departmental, and shared leadership activities; supports department and unit goals in daily behavior.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develops, implements, and updates the patient’s plan of care based on ongoing assessment of the patient and input from the patient’s family.
  • Shares information and collaborates with other members of the health care team to promote effective patient care.
  • Verifies and implements orders from physician, physician assistant, and/or advanced practice nurse by performing interventions as prescribed by the provider and documenting accurately in the electronic medical record.
  • Engages and obtains information from patient and/or family to develop an appropriate patient educational plan.
  • Recognizes symptoms, establishes priorities, and responds to patient’s changing needs.
  • Engages support personnel by delegating appropriate tasks per the Illinois State Nurse Practice Act and provides support and feedback.
  • Advocates for patients, families, significant others, the community, and the nursing profession.
  • Integrates theoretical knowledge, evidence-based research, current standards of practice, and clinical experience to provide quality patient care as measured by established nursing quality standards and applicable governing or accrediting bodies.
  • Assumes role of Charge Nurse when assigned, utilizing appropriate resources and tools.
  • Collaborates with other nurses to identify, promote, and provide positive learning experiences for staff and students.
  • Serves as preceptor and/or clinical resource to nursing staff, support staff, and students.
  • Takes responsibility for continued professional growth and development by identifying learning needs and initiating strategies to meet those needs.
  • Provides clinical care and coordination for patients across assigned transplant programs as applicable.
  • Provides post-donor follow-up care as needed.
  • Assesses, plans, and evaluates interventions for patients seen in clinic and those followed remotely.
  • Monitors and follows up on diagnostic studies and communicates results to providers as appropriate.
  • Responds to patient communications, including phone calls and electronic health portal inquiries.
  • Facilitates prescription renewal and refill requests in collaboration with providers.
  • Communicates and escalates patient issues or concerns to physicians and the multidisciplinary team in a timely manner.
  • Ensures clinical coordination activities comply with applicable regulatory, accreditation, and program-specific requirements.
  • Participates in departmental, organizational, and shared governance activities in support of unit and institutional goals.
  • Participates in or supports evidence-based practice and quality improvement initiatives to improve patient care outcomes.
  • Floats within the assigned department or specialty area as scheduled or as operational needs require.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
  • Current AHA BLS/CPR and other required unit specific certifications
  • Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate therapeutic relationships between patients, family, and health care providers
  • Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) with on-the-job training
  • Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills and work history required.
  • Minimum two (2) years of RN experience required.
  • Graduation from an accrediate BSN program required.
  • Current advanced cardiac life support, or within 6 months of hire for main hospital.
