A great UHY client is seeking a Senior Accounting Manager. The ideal candidate will have extensive multifamily residential property accounting experience, proven leadership experience, and the ability to independently oversee property accounting operations with minimal training.
The Senior Accounting Manager role is a hybrid position with 2 days a week onsite. This is a direct hire position.
Senior Accounting Manager Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes for multifamily residential and commercial properties.
- Review and approve property-level financial statements, supporting schedules, and account reconciliations.
- Ensure accurate accounting for rental income, concessions, security deposits, resident receivables, operating expenses, accruals, capital expenditures, fixed assets, intercompany transactions, ownership transactions, and CAM (Common Area Maintenance) reconciliations.
- Analyze financial results and investigate budget-to-actual and period-over-period variances.
- Supervise, mentor, and develop Senior and Staff Property Accountants through coaching, training, and performance management.
- Maintain strong cash management processes, bank reconciliations, and financial controls.
- Partner with Operations and Asset Management during the annual budgeting and forecasting process.
- Review and validate property budgets, financial assumptions, and provide recommendations to support business decisions.
- Drive consistency, standardization, and process improvements across the property accounting function.
- Partner with the Controller during HUD audits, tax return preparation, and other compliance activities.
- Manage the setup of new bank accounts, banking platforms, accounting software, and positive pay functionality.
- Oversee reserve replacement draw requests and related financial reporting.
- Lead quarterly distribution processes for REO and fee-managed properties.
- Develop and implement accounting policies and best practices to improve efficiency and accuracy.
- Support company growth initiatives, special projects, and strategic financial objectives.
Senior Accounting Manager Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field.
- Minimum of 7 years of accounting experience with a strong emphasis on multifamily residential real estate property management accounting.
- Minimum of 3 years of leadership or supervisory experience managing accounting staff.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and real estate accounting principles.
- Experience reviewing financial statements, reconciliations, budgets, and property financial performance.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills required.
- Experience with property management/accounting software such as RealPage, Yardi, or MRI.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across departments.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and process-driven.
- Demonstrated ability to improve accounting processes and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Self-motivated and accountable with the ability to quickly step into a leadership role and operate independently with minimal training.
- CPA or CMA certification is preferred but not required.
- Public accounting experience in audit or tax is a plus but not required.
- Commercial real estate accounting experience is beneficial; however, strong multifamily residential accounting experience is the primary focus.
